This used to happen in high school as well, kids would miss whole 50mins-hour worth of class to go pray. Most of the time I dont even see them doing that. In was almost an excuse to skip class.

Then it is better the person who wants to do this kind of activity should inform management before joining the employer that he will take 30 min break in each 2-3 hour so that he can pray to his God...Rather than protesting with employer, it is better to inform them and if they do not allow you to pray you can look for a job where these things are allowed..

Fully agree with you.

Islam is misunderstood by Muslims mainly. In Islam, earning Halal (legitimate money) is very important. People do not understand if they spend 30 mins outside of the work and are paid for it (for whatever reasons) is Haram (making money illegal to spend on yourself or your family). If by any chance, a Muslim suspects Haraam in his wealth, he must give it back to the original owner or to poor (if the owner is not available) and that too without expecting that it will count in his good deeds (because the money was not his in the first place).

In this case, one prayer can be offered in the lunch break. For the other prayer, they should seek special permission in lieu of incurring extra time in the office. For example, if they are spending 15 mins on a prayer, they should spend 15 more mins in the office or start their work 15 mins early.

I think when majority of workers , agree on a view , they can request the management to make an exception by working late that particular day etc happens in all industries

Its just poor management

I have also seen people who pray regularly while on work in Masjid, but when they go home, they do not go to Masjid and delay the prayers to complete their personal responsibilities first or leaving the prayers altogether. The next day, they b i t c h about not having enough time for prayers at work and then protest.

These people are called hypocrites.

In production facilities the activity of one shop is linked to the one before & after. One bunch decides to break for prayer would break the production chain . Why would workers in the other shops work extra to facilitate prayers of others.

I think it was a correct decision to fire them else it would set precedents.

Not if you are operating a production line where stoppages every couple of hour would effect overall efficiency drastically

Well I don't think u required a lot of time to offer ur prayers ... if u have shot break provided by ur employer like 5 to 8 minutes it would be enough to perform any of Farz including abolution ... All u recite after surah Fateha is 4 Qul Shareef which is standard to learn by heart to perform a prayer so its standard to offer our prayers as well like benchmark ... So if someone want to play this prayer card nonsense and want to make a fuss out of hay and highlight muslims as problems they should be face the consequences as well.

If they are an odd hour workers like in 2nd shift they may offer Mughrib "3 Farz" prayers and leave Issha "4 Farz, 3 Witer" for late night as the job time over. If one have a night shift their may only occur Salat e Fajar "2 Sunnat 2 Farz". If u are a general 9 to 5 worker then u may occur with 2 salath from which for only one u need an extra break for 5 to 8 minutes which is "Asar 4 Farz". and Salath e Zuhar can be performed in Lunch break easily which is "4 Farz 4 Sunnah 2 Sunnah".

America, claimed to fight a war against extremism, is itself becoming extremist in its views

Religious freedom does not give people practicing religion the right to undermine the rights of others, including businesses. The business should attempt to make reasonable accommodations for religious practice, but, as I mentioned above, the company is arguing that the workers were making unreasonable demands.
i think giving break for 20 minutes is not such a big issue . Company can make schedule for the prayers time.

Don't come to US then..
double standards

FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Nearly 200 Muslim workers have been fired from a Cargill meatpacking plant in Colorado, for walking out after a dispute over prayer breaks.
Praying five times a day is a must for many Muslims.

But Tony Aden says missing even one of those prayers over a break time dispute caused him and many others to walk away from their jobs.

"It don't matter if I don't have a job, my religion is more important," Aden told CBS News.

The following Monday, nearly 200 employees from the Muslim community didn't show up to work for three consecutive days. The company fired them all.

"There are times when accommodation is not possible," Martin said. "But in an overwhelming majority of instances, we do everything we can to ensure sure that we do accommodate employees."

Jaylani Hussein represents 150 workers who are now without a job.

"Now we are getting supervisors who are telling our clients to go home if they wanted to pray," Hussein said. "If they are denied their basic rights to practice their faith reasonably at their employment, they seem to be losing one of the basic fundamental rights."

Cargill is now hiring to fill the shoes of those who walked out.

Areas have been set up at Cargill since 2009 to accommodate anyone who requested time to pray.

The Council on American Islamic Relations is currently working reach an agreement with Cargill so that those fired workers can return.

For the last 1400 years?? sorry...ppl have hard time believing that anymore.
i would suggest just take away islam from all muslims and give it to non-muslims...they would probably run it far better.

does the quran talk about five-prayers-day and does it describe the manner of prayer??

as far as i know, no on both things. :)

i believe the five prayers comes from zoroastrian religion which indirectly influenced some of the hadith writers, especially the persian, bukhari... and it is from the hadith books ( don't know which one and don't care ) that five prayers originates.

we must accept something from the hadith works ( and there are many ) only if it agrees with common sense and reject it otherwise.

besides, you did not respond to my point of the ibm-bangalore muslims and muslimahs not benefiting from establishing or talking of establishing a prayer culture in their offices.

and what can you tell me about the demolition of buildings in the nepal earthquake of 2015?? :)

yes, that they could.

Ever heard of Sunnah and Hadith, you don't have clue about Islam and here talking like a scholar.

Their leaders clearly said prayers are more important than work so why the fuss if employer doesnt allow it they should seek employment some where who allows work schedule matching their routine

If this becomes a trade union type issue, it will hurt employability of muslims. A few might get compensated in labour tribunals, but companies will be wary of employing muslims, or will pay them lower wages(like they do to women).

Not to offend pious Muslims - But, the stereotype of 5 time namazi with daadi can be seen suspiciously in a country like India. On topic: only on Friday noons I've seen them disappearing from the offices for nimaz.

Nobody cares about a shithole like india

How would they know if a person is Muslim or nah?

In U.S, it is illegal to ask for the religion of the potential employee
