Hundreds of Muslim workers fired after dispute over prayers

Employees are suppose to allow for smoke break of 15 min to workers every 3-4 hours.
Generally after 4 hours a break of 15 minutes is also due. Not to mention a break for lunch is also there

Seems like the manager of organization did not know how to MANAGE the break process
From what I've read (and could be just the company's version of the issue), breaks for prayers were being accommodated by the company, but the workers wanted to pray in large groups at the same time, which is what the company (understandably) opposed.

The company would either have to shut down production lines during the 'group prayer breaks' being demanded or incur additional expenses by hiring more employees just to cover 'group prayer breaks' to keep production going.

I think your country’s plate is already full with troublemaker like these. :D

ah. well... a few more crows among the many here won't make much difference i suppose. :D

but i think they are safer in usa than in india where there is a growing movement towards progressive change and rejection of reactionaries, whether they are the sanghis or those like these "brothers" in that meatpacking plant in usa.

Nobody cares besides Indian OP.

So fed up of these stupid overly religious fcks. Gtf out of here back to your country if prayer is your first priority where you can pray all day and not work at all, which ironically is the situation of these Muslim countries. Morons

You seems false flager, because your info about daily prayer is wrong.

@Horus @WebMaster please clear this thread from post spreading wrong info about Islam and look into people who are spreading it.

I'm not a falseflagger, A Proud Pakistani.
Though not very religious, if my words have offended you then I apologise that.

Just stating what one of the "Molvi" told me.

Also since I'm not very religious, does not mean i'm not from Pakistan.

actually, lot of the first generation of the overly religious muslims in the west are either exiles or escapees from socialist muslim-majority countries.

look at bashar al-assad's wife... she does not wear burqa or a a huge hijab... but certainly the female members of exile families certainly do.

Well people can be overly religious if they want for whatever reason, if thats the most they want out of their life. But the key thing is to stay away form being consumed or giving into the terrorism ideology which prays of such weak people and keep the top priority drama to self and home. Outside esp in work zones, work is the top priority regardless of which generation they find their religion in.

Guys these kind of news might surprise you...But these basic norms in India where in small scale manufacturing industries, where communist have a good hold, they always demand for spare time for Muslims each day....So you can understand the situation...If the owner or manager of the industry says no, those people will come on the street with violence..which is quite common from Communist people...So out of fear, they allow good amount of time to Muslim employees...just to pray out of work time...That is why you can see..why West Bengal is a beggar state now..which was a prime state at one point of time..

I think its the west who is always bitching for human rights freedom of speach and thousands of other rights and freedoms etc
Religious freedom does not give people practicing religion the right to undermine the rights of others, including businesses. The business should attempt to make reasonable accommodations for religious practice, but, as I mentioned above, the company is arguing that the workers were making unreasonable demands.

Isn't feeding their families more important? o_O

Anyway it is actually necessary to pray 5 times a day? I have known some Muslims and they definitely did not pray 5 times a day.
It is generally accepted that it is mandatory for a Muslim to pray 5 times a day but that also depends on the individual's level of commitment to their religious duties as well.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Council on Islamic-American Relations (CAIR) is negotiating with Cargill on this. CAIR has been on the scene lately whenever there are provocations to establish special powers or privileges for Muslims in the U.S.
Come again??

The company should buy and ship 200 of these for each of the ex-employees.

5 times prayers are must. There is no difference of opinion among any of the sunni sect of Islam. For Shia, they join 2 prayers and thus they can pray three times.

However in UAE,

1 - First prayer in before sunrise - so no conflict with the work time.
2 - Second prayer is in the mid day - Here is UAE, the time starts shortly after twelve and ends around half past three. A Muslim can complete his/ her prayer in 15-20 mins.
3 - Third prayer time starts right after second prayer time ends, and ends before sunset. Ample time again to offer prayers.
4 - Fourth prayer time starts after sunset and ends after more than an hour. Most people reach their home before the fifth prayer time starts. so no conflict with the work time.
5 - Fifth prayer time starts right after fourth prayer and ends in the morning (approx. some minutes before sunrise). So again no issue with the work.

The only two prayers that conflict with the work time are second and third, which take approx. 30 mins to complete.

Even if Muslim workers want to pray in congregation, they can do that in groups of two or more (in their preferred time slot).

Don't know why some Muslims want to be highlighted.

Each prayer can but does not have to take that long. Zuhr fard will take 5 min. Another 5 minutes for the Sunnah. And 5 minutes for Asr, whose Sunnah you can skip. So in total 10 to 15 min, not difficult to manage during lunches and breaks.

The company knows how to manage the break process. What happened is that many Muslims in one section wanted to take their prayer break all at once, which would have disturbed production, rather than the usual 1-2 at a time. The Muslims specifically demanded the company change its current rules: link. When they were refused, not just these Muslims but two hundred more walked out.

Under the law, an employer does not have to accept a religious accommodation that involves undue hardship on its business and halting production five times a day to accommodate the religious desires of workers certainly qualifies. So Cargill was within its rights to fire these striking workers and it's likely that a discrimination suit against the employer would fail.

If all the employees wanted to take their breaks at the same time, then that is definitely not reasonable, and they are on the wrong. If the employer wanted to stagger their breaks but allow everyone to pray, then they were being accommodating.
