How Yunus got the Nobel peace prize without stopping a war -Awami League GS

I'm different than Yunus

Dilip hits back at Rafique

Industries Minister Dilip Barua yesterday hit back at barrister Rafique ul Huq for his comment that the minister is not worthy of even Prof Yunus' nail.

“I fully agree with his [Rafique] remark. Because I could not achieve the quality of sucking blood of the country's general people like Dr Muhammad Yunus' Grameen Bank to own crores of taka," said the minister in a press statement.

“My political ideology is to serve people,” said Dilip, also general secretary of Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal, a component of the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance.

According to him, Rafique ul Haq does not know that many have lost their lands and houses to repay the Grameen Bank loan while some others have committed suicide failing to pay back the money.

In an apparent effort to ridicule the Nobel Laureate, Dilip invited Yunus to enter politics to check his popularity.

On Saturday, eminent lawyer Rafique said, “With due respect for Dilip Barua, I want to say that he is not worthy of Dr Yunus' nail even.”

Dilip Barua had on Friday sharply criticised Prof Yunus for raising the caretaker government issue before US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her 5-6 May Dhaka visit.

Indians and their RAWamy agents are jealous about the recognition and attention Dr. Yunus gets. Dr. Yunus has been good for the BRAND BANGLADESH and no one can change this fact. So our country and people are grateful to him.

The concept of micro-credit is not flawless, essentially it is a more organized and systematic loan-sharking scheme, taking it out of unscrupulous profiteers and land-grabbers and giving it a more humane face. But there is a market and need for zero collateral micro loans which this concept addresses. Because of the existence of micro-credit, it is possible for small scale entrepreneurs to get loan and take business risks and often succeed, which otherwise would not be possible.

It is no replacement for macro-economic national strategies such as export driven growth strategy and FDI, that brings in jobs and employment, by connecting a country with world economy. What micro-credit does is help the internal economy within the country more equitable, as it opens up opportunity for marginalized and low income people who have never had this path available before micro-credit was introduced. It is also a good way to teach people how to take loans and business risks, make payments, essentially become economically active responsible citizens.

That said, it should continue to get development funding, be under govt. control, abusive pressures should be reduced as much as possible and interest rates charged should be reduced.

That's a good analysis(except for usual RAWAMY garbage). I have no problem with micro financing, but the issue with Grameen is you act like any normal businessman would, but wear a facade of saint. :)

At least local loan sharks pay taxes.

A loan shark is doing it all wrong

I agree that social business does have flaws. And it isn't the lone solution to eradicate poverty. But based on results, Dr. Yunus did partly help reduce poverty in Bangladesh. Back in the 90's, people living below poverty was as high as 60%.

You'd be surprised that the kind of propaganda the AL work towards against Dr. Yunus. And no, this has not been happening since he won the Nobel back in 2006. They have been targeting him way before that. It didn't matter if he won the Nobel anyways.

Who do you think has been working on that kind of propaganda and why? I'd leave it to you to decide.

This kind of propaganda hasn't been around ever since the 70's.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has presented Muhammad Yunus with a Phoenix Award.

Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and so-called "Father of Microcredit," was honored Friday at City Hall. The award is the highest honor the mayor can bestow upon an individual for their outstanding contributions.

Yunus has also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal. His goal is the total eradication of global poverty through more equitable lending practices.
