I have had the opportunity of meeting Muslims from Russia and CIS states, and what they have to say about the USSR's control of their religion was nothing short of a fascist state. They were not allowed to keep the Quran in their houses, or pray. Any sort of religious practice was forbidden. Quran was taught only verbally and in secret. Children could not be taught to read it. People prayed in secret, hiding it from their own children, in case a child might tell his friends at school.

Yes, for those that know history, extremism was introduced into the Muslim world by ex-Nazis

Every power intervened in other/less powered countries to maintain its influence and order while risking lives and brought destruction. It is very simple to understand that no other Country can change the ones culture, customs or even the way of Government because of different values of society and it is also being one of the reasons that countries destroyed or I may made as nothing but Chaos only to inject self system of Rule and Democracy.

In short, USSR coming to Afghanistan was not the choice of Moscow alone at that time but invitation from Ruling Afghan that lost control when tried to inject a system contrary to the culture and society values while challenging the ages old Jirga system which alarmed Muslims at large due to sensing of threat to Muslims. The game was so complicated of that time. Not to forget that Afghanistan was defined as buffer state against USSR to keep her away from this region and sea link world. Ruling Afghan did the same thing which was felt as a threat and then US alongwith West jumped in so the USSR can be countered way before it make it Arabian Sea/South Asia openly. While along the same international game, Ruling Afghan thought as they will suppress the rising rebellion with power/help of USSR which in my view, is same as like what Assad did in Syria hence other parties got a chance to participate and make it a mess. In short, what I see. it was all the wrong doing at the end of Leaders/Government of the Country that not just miserably failed to handle the matter which was purely internal attention paying thing due to blindness of power and greed and resultantly, the Chaos and Unrest/War as the Government shouldn't have done such while having such vast society with different customs, culture and believers.

ME, well it was all about to keep ones presence, take out as much as resources like Oil, secure the Israel that felt every country as threat in Middle East for her existence.

Coming to Syria then as I said up here, same thing happened but parties, occasion and with a bit of more intentions were involved. Afghanistan was a buffer state to stop USSR but here in Syria it was actually to keep presence of one's power as well as a reach to the resources which is mostly known as Oil in Syria. Also, Israel has been manipulating as well in all those states in ME for the sake of own security while risking the whole region. So Assad invited Ruyssia this time to keep his power intact on the same basis against own people (the citizens) that opposed his government due to many reasons hence the rebellion in Syria. On the same time, International Parties once again opposing Russia as well as keeping in view the Oil and US with security of Israel as one of the agendas jumped in and Syria became a mess.

Now we Muslims. Well, to be honest, where our enemy tried to damage and harm us as much it can on the same time, our greed deluded us that we became prey and forgot our teachings of Islam, Faith and all while devil of Power taken over our minds and hearts that our enemy (having a chance) manipulated the same as an opportunity whereby the Muslims Ruling Leaders found injustice against own citizens as justified and right of the Government in the name of maintaining law & order as well the so-called democracy. We are also the part of our destruction which is solely based upon being uneducated, getting away from our real teachings of Islam, being divided into many for personal interests and lust of money and I see that as bound to happen. So until & unless, we do not correct ourselves and make our acts right, we will be seeing the same chaos that would even increase. For us Muslims, the Quran, Hadith are good enough for these times and it is enough as evident that most of the people are unable to choose what and who is right or wrong and few are misguided yet remaining are on right way that purely are aware of the Islam. ALLAH knows best and all.

The terms as radicals, extremists this & that Muslims/Islam are nothing but different labels by the enemies of Islam so they can make an attempt to malign and defame Muslims but as we know there is the will of ALLAH which will happen contrary to the schemes of the enemies/non-believers and till then, the time is a test for all us that I pray, we many not fail otherwise, it is going to be very difficult for us to answer in afterlife. How many instance of the world you recall where economic collapse and political unrest ended up in defragmentation of the federations ?

And, before the Mujahideen, what US was achieving in its fight against USSR and where ?

USA was ally of greater number of Muslim states and more influential and stronger ones.
USSR did more damage than good to every Muslim state. Same goes for uncle same.

The collapse of the USSR was in 1991.
The defragmentation was because Gorbatjov allowed the Russians & others to voice their opinion,
which was that they did not want to remain in the USSR.
There are very few instances where federations have defragmented without political unrest, LOL...
Economic collapse is a contributing factor, but not neccessary.

The war with USSR was the Cold War and it was a decisive win.

Sir, you have just contained such a large subject so efficiently. I agree to each of you words and endorse your every idea. There no doubt that lack of education, no understanding of Islamic principles and greed of ourselves is the reason that we are unable to tackle the challenges which we face today as a nation. And this failure eventually leads us to fall prey to the the enemies.

I will like to add here that since the second world war, lack of leadership accompanied by imposition of tyrant oppressor by the west has also contributed to the plight of current era. But, what is more damaging (which I have observed) is that all those countries who have been unable to come out of the effects of colonial era's exploitation, have no transparent mechanism of power transfer. They have been ruled by people chosen by the west one after the other and, as it makes sense, they have only exercised their power to benefit the west more than their own peoples. And, eventually when the Western powers find it necessary, they spread the propaganda against them of being pro-American and bring the whole society to its knees through chaos and civil wars. In any country, you can find the discontented. And imagine what would happen if the United States collapsed in 1991, and the Soviet Union would invest billions in propaganda against the Arab monarchs. Very quickly, it would be possible to create an army of millions of poor people who would destroy the Arab countries in the Gulf. Would it be the US or the Arab monarchies guilt? No. It would be guilt of the USSR. Just as the destruction of the socialist Arab countries - guilt of the United States and its allies.
