OSS/CIA playbook to destroy the Catholic cities in the North.
Having grown up in a Catholic family in a Northern city I think I can speak from reality.
A good point is made that the majority of Catholic Church Congregations were located in cities and served mostly the Irish/Italian communities of immigrants who mostly came over in the late 1880's. The Catholic Church was certainly nowhere near as entrenched as the countless thousands of Protestant churches dotting every single town across the US since the 1600's.
It is certainly logical to believe that seeing elaborate
stone Catholic Churches being built in cities compared to the simplistic
wooden Protestant Churches would make them feel incredibly uneasy. Plus having Catholics vote in a unified block would not be in the Protestant's best interests.
Was there some conspiracy to spook the Catholics out of their massive city congregations leaving them scattered haphazardly in various Protestant Church dominated suburbs?
Certainly this is not beyond the realm of possibilities. You could make an argument that all those tv shows in the 50's showing the good happy life
(of mostly WASPS BTW) in the suburbs was some subliminal plot to weaken the strength of city Catholic congregations by generating a strong desire to move out.
You can also say policies encouraging minorities to move to cities would certainly help.
It is true that Catholic churches in cities are in serious decline and many have even been sold. Usually sold to condo developers..and certainly not to your typical white Protestant congregation...who BTW have also left the cities. But you can successfully argue that in the scope of the big picture this was a very small price to pay to have them sacrificed.
Hmm....
Well the fact of the matter is those Catholic Churches built for those 1880's immigrants had already lost much of their appeal even before people moved out of the city. It's similar to 3rd/4th gen Italian or Chinese people not knowing how to speak their ancestral tongue perfectly anymore because it was something not important to them. The same happens with their religion. Those churches were built for their great-grandparents who were devout and could speak every line in the Bible. But the latter generations can not. While their great-grandparents went to Church every chance possible..each following generation that went by did less and less...
So who is going to those city Catholic churches now...mostly Spanish speaking new immigrants from south of the border..and in 3 to 4 generations they too likely wont be going either.
But he is overlooking some dirty laundry. Those Catholic congregations were causes of city neighborhood segregation. Everybody wanted to live nearby and I'm sure there was plenty of discrimination in home sales. So you got you all-white church in your all-white city neighborhood. You got your all-black church in your all-black neighborhood. You got your all-Italian church in your all-Italian neighborhood.
He is bemoaning the loss of congregations..but maybe a bigger cause is neighborhoods being more mixed now.
