I heard Assad was not so bad guy before, but now he got caught in a trap and lost his soul and became the butcher he is now. But the real crazy one I heard is Maher, his brother, who did this Chemical attack. I also heard that Maher has a very bad temper, when he could not make progress in an offensive, he just decided to gas the people to kill them all.

I am of the opinion. and its my opinion from what I have observed. He himself holds no power, he was the front man for the regime, its mainly his brother and other alawite relatives who control the scene, and the Iranians who dont want him or his regime gone. As it is in their strategic interest to have them in power.
