Pashtuns voted to join Pakistan.Pakistan makes up largest portion of Pastun population.In 1950 and 60's a movement lead by ANP and Fikir of ipi with support from India and Afghanistan was being used to make a new province of Afghanistan or a new country known as Pashtunistan.That idea was getting popular because Pastuns at that time were not well integrated into Rest of Pakistan, but as Ayub khan took over government he took notice of it and solved it at first priority,that is what he did..

It was a period of Pakistan's political history which saw a large number of ethnic Pashtuns holding high positions in the military and the bureaucracy. The growing participation of Pashtuns in the Pakistani Government resulted in the erosion of the support for the Pashtunistan movement in the Province by the end of the 1960s."

After soviets invasion of Afghanistan KGB did her best to revive Pashtunistan movement through Armed struggle according to them that will put an end to US-Pak support for Afghan's but it was beating a dead horse.
After US invasion of Afghanistan due to short sighting of "kommondo" India was granted free hand by US to launch operations.First Indians were also thinking of Pashtunistan along with Hamid Karzai but knowing they fact that Pathan=Pakistan India shifted her attention to Religious guys.
Today Pashtuns form core of every Government Institution.You will not see a piece of Pakistan where a Pashtun will not be found.And no doubt this all is possible due to Ayub Khan if he hav'nt recgonised th problem then enemy may have exploited this to large level.

Anyways, Afghanistan is just around 15% in terms of population to Pakistan. Their persistence of not recognising Durand Line would have cost them a country as I remember one video interview of General Zia claiming Pakistan has no desire to invade Afghanistan. Thankfully Pakistan already has tons of mess that they can't afford to think about such an idea and Afghans should wake up to realise the reality and acknowledge Durand Line as permanent border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

anyway there was NO Pashtunistan to begin with it died down in 1947 when we joined Pakistan. Period.

Any referendum in North West Pakistan will put a big slap on face of those who are dreaming of breaking away North West Pakistan .

All those elements in Afghanistan who are dreaming of anything like that would never dare to agree for any such referendum in Afghanistan

I know, even US acknowledges Durand Line as International border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
