How much can you earn being a software engineer ?

I am also a software engineer doing programming from last 8 years...............and it is true that this is a timeless job.....without any boundries.........but first thing you must decide yourselft that you want to become a coder (a guy with degree and can do only cut and paste the coding here and there) or a real programmer who work in this field with passion and always in mood to learn something.

Second thing if you really want to become a programmer then i will suggest you that you learn Microsoft Dot Net Technologies..........coz all microsoft Future technologies based on Dot Net..........that includes.......VB.Net, C#(Sharp).Net, C++.Net, F#.Net, ASP.Net ( not a language but technology).........but i will prefer that you learn one of them and grassp on that language....most favorits are VB.Net and C#.Net..........
Plus you also learn ASP.Net for web programming, plus HTML, CCS, JavaScript and J-Query..........and off course Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL Programming...

Its looks like hard for a new programmer but once you have expert in above mentioned languages and technologies your future is bright you can get handsome money.............Even in Pakistan i have lot of friends in this field and they are earning average 40000 to 60000 Rs. Per month in this field.

For new commers these are really good websites to learn with their own without any teacher.......you can pay and download videos from these sites........

Bah! I hated C++.

^^^
Your'e telling him to learn a lot of languages there! :D

Only thing I would say is if you're going to learn Web stuff, learn PHP as well. Javascript is nice to have in your pocket but it's not completely necessary. Basic knowledge of it is enough. HTML 5 is going to make things a lot easier for web developers.

Depends which company you work for, some will indeed make you work long hours quite often. The more resource constrained a company is, the more they will make their employees work long hours.

I work at Research in Motion, and while I do see some people putting in long hours, it's not that common.

In India it depends on the College/University from which you You graduate. It varies from 600,000 p.a to 2,000,000 p.a.

Ok guyz i am considering a career switch to software engineering.

I have a feeling that quite a few ppl here belong to the IT sector so i thought it would be a good place to ask.

The guidance that i got from my friends is that software engineering is a low paying, long hour working, thankless and a never ending job ?

Infact they say that hours are so long in this job that often they find themselves spending nights after nights doing programming for just a mediocre salary.

Is it true ?

How much can a entry level programmer earn(In Pakistan and in India)?

Is it hard to find a job in this field(Pakistan)?

Plz tell me any special things i need to know

thks.

I am reading your Post while sitting in a Software Office where I am doing Internship :azn:, I am not a software Engineer myself , But I see my Colleagues working about 8 to 9 hours maximum . Only there are some cases after like 6-7 weeks when the due date of Project is near and you have to work like upto12 hours or more ,but you are always paid extra for that if you are working in a good Repute Office!!!, Like in my workplace they serve us Pizza :coffee: etc....
