How much can you earn being a software engineer ?

Sales - If you have ability to sell, have patience to hear customer's !@#$#$#$ with smiling face. Good presentation and communication skills etc.

Wow man. Sales it is one hell of a job that requires well an extremely extremely shrewd person with a very cunning personality. not my cup of tea.

Depends on the college you study and its brand value.
Not entirely , it depends upon academic performance/GPA . what im getting at is the variety in prospects vary alot .
Some people barely make it and others join MNCs . But those who don't in my experience have been treated much worse than those who get by with good GPAs even tho they get a degree from a colleges like GNDU and PEC .

hmmm 10-12 hours a day is not a problem.I was told that i would have to work like 16 hours at least half a week and i thought hey if i work 16 hours then there are only 8 left for sleeping.lol

Anyways now that talk has started i want to know that if i am going to make a career switch which field on average has the highest pay?

Making money is something thats second if ur getting a job via a degree. The real money comes after u have a stable job. Try real estate, Opening small scale Industries, Get a demat account and try Investing IN mfs or volatile shares multiplying ur capital over time.

The ways are endless... Focusing on job that gives more money is the worst u can do to ur life and prospects.. do what u love and the rest comes easy.

Ok guyz i am considering a career switch to software engineering.
I have a feeling that quite a few ppl here belong to the IT sector so i thought it would be a good place to ask.
The guidance that i got from my friends is that software engineering is a low paying, long hour working, thankless and a never ending job ?
Infact they say that hours are so long in this job that often they find themselves spending nights after nights doing programming for just a mediocre salary.
Is it true ?
How much can a entry level programmer earn(In Pakistan and in India)?
Is it hard to find a job in this field(Pakistan)?
Plz tell me any special things i need to know
thks.

SE and programming is not a career you should expect to grow for long. The software industry in Pakistan is too small and gets too little business from inside the country to afford you that. Just be warned.

I recommend you look into industrial stuff....Application is pretty generic now and you wont be able to compete with thousand and thousands of Indians and eventually end up earning rubbish wages.

.
Two of my friends work in IBM and SAP. One earn 35000 per month (IBM) and another 60000 per month (SAP).

.
In India it depends on company and criteria basis. As per my knowledge various salaries per month for entry level software engineers:

Companies (Currency INR)

Accenture 25000
Infosys 25000
Wipro 26000
TCS 26000
Capgemini 26000
CTS 26000
IBM 27000
CISCO 27000
Samsung 28000
Nokia Siemens 35000
SAP 36000
Oracle 40000
Microsoft 55000
Google 70000

govt sector entry level 25000 to 40000 depending on the job grade.

It means that getting a stable job must be the key.BTW what do you mean by Small scale industries ?

That's exactly what one of my friends told me. He said that anybody can program these days. There are people who are expert programmers but don't even have a college degree. Anyways what do you mean by Industrial stuff ?

People who want to migrate to S/w industry need to be very clear.. It requires a passion and that too long term.. I have seen people joining because they love coding and then they find some other kind of job ( Say support, Quality, Internal product development, Internal software and network monitoring etc) and then they start getting frustrated. Only Salary bound them and then after 3-4 years they start preparing for MBAs etc.

The industry looks very flashy though with having laptop, sitting in AC, work from home, Onsite etc but these things dont work when you dont have passion to learn new or having ideas and desire to implement. The, so called, Process in industry makes it more headache towards resource. Initial salaries are good in comparison to other jobs an one can handsomely save money during onsite trips (Around 70k-2 lakh INR monthly saving) but then one need to stick to the basics.

.
in india it depends on many factors

avg figures only in INR

your university: (only BTech or MCA)
1. IIT (indian institute of tech) grad - 6.5 to 8 lakhs p.a
2. NIT grad (national institute of tech) - 5.8 lakhs p.a
3. Good Pvt university - 5 p.a

your back ground and choice of stream

1. Analyst with maths background from CMI (chennai mathematical institute) or ISI (indian statistical institute) or IISc : 12 - 14 lakhs p.a
2. economics background : 10-12
3. electrical : 4-6
4. electronics : 5-7

and finally the company that is recruiting and its department
R&D gets the max followed by system analyst and then comes the developer.

I was talking in general. i am correct about the scale for mass entries but it varies. i know a girl got job in google as fresher for 14 lacs/annum and another one in microsoft 8.5 lacs. Oracle pays one of my friend 24 lacs/annum, he has eight years of work experience. Yahoo and SAP also pays good salary.

I am also a software engineer doing programming from last 8 years...............and it is true that this is a timeless job.....without any boundries.........but first thing you must decide yourselft that you want to become a coder (a guy with degree and can do only cut and paste the coding here and there) or a real programmer who work in this field with passion and always in mood to learn something.

Second thing if you really want to become a programmer then i will suggest you that you learn Microsoft Dot Net Technologies..........coz all microsoft Future technologies based on Dot Net..........that includes.......VB.Net, C#(Sharp).Net, C++.Net, F#.Net, ASP.Net ( not a language but technology).........but i will prefer that you learn one of them and grassp on that language....most favorits are VB.Net and C#.Net..........
Plus you also learn ASP.Net for web programming, plus HTML, CCS, JavaScript and J-Query..........and off course Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL Programming...

Its looks like hard for a new programmer but once you have expert in above mentioned languages and technologies your future is bright you can get handsome money.............Even in Pakistan i have lot of friends in this field and they are earning average 40000 to 60000 Rs. Per month in this field.

See this site...........there are hell of jobs for Progammers and IT Persons in Paksitan
