Hong Kong no.1 in World Competitiveness Rankings

Shanghai has already surpassed our Economy. And Hong Kong's economy was always bigger than Singapore's to start with.

Now you are taking credit for Singapore's achievements?

You know that the vast majority of Singapore's population are Han Chinese right?

Do you know what Singaporeans and Malaysians think of Indians? :azn: I have relatives there, so I know.

do you kow the difference between GDP and per capita? if you dont know ask. just because of the sheer numbers you have more gdp thats all. quality wise SGP is the best in asia and in the top 3 in the world.
I take credit for sgp because i have contributed to its economy.
there are 2 types of indians in MY and SGP. old indians who were the workers of Brit raj who were forcibly brought here. their situation is not too good. and other is guys like me, educated in india and workning in top financial services and other industry.
I know that han chini are a lot, but they highly respect skilled indians. so your relative need to learn better observation skills i think.

ok , i am going for tea break . don go anywhere and keep all your posts

Singapore is a majority ethnic-Chinese country.

You keep boasting about Indians, but try that in Singapore itself and see what happens.

I have friends who are Singaporean, and I get along well with them, considering all the similarities there are between HK and SG. I don't get along with you, because you are not a Singaporean, you are an INDIAN.

I have a huge admiration for Singapore, and I get along extremely well with all the Singaporeans here on this forum. You are trying to argue with me on their behalf, even though you are an Indian.

I dont have to boast about indians from india in sgp, because they look at us with awe. we are dominating their banks and it. come anyday to banks like citi or stanchart in sgp and see for yourself. CEO of DBS bank is indian (from india). sgp maybe majority han, but still we indians contribute a lot and we have a rule of law
In 3 months time when I get the sgp passport, you will have to get along with me because i will be sgpean.

LOLOL, must be an indian again. Always playing with false claims to boast its own ego.

First, may I know why you want to become a miserably citizen in our country when you are so pround of India while pulling my country down with ill remarks on native local lifestyle? i.e. slum is much better than our(singapore) HDB flats etc.

Just like your precedent, I caught you lying again here by trying to mislead others to believe that you will be granted with a citizenship by Singapore.

Well, care to explain to us on how we could allow ONLY YOU when the constitution and laws of Singapore clearly stated that it forbides any local citizen to hold double citizenships?

Even with your IOC, the best deal you can get is "Permanent Residenceship", which isn't a citizenship, granting you No citizenship rights but only certain benefits. Obivously, you are a very dishonest person and in our society which unlike yours, we greatly detest people who exhibited such a dishonest behaviour with poor integrity (if there is any).

BTW, you are pay here to work during the office hours, so better you jolly well perform your due necessary and stop boasting shamelessly about how you have contributed greatly to our economy.

Thanks...LOLOL.

Buddy, please ignore this "Singaporean Wannabe", she/ he is definitely not one of us, we singaporeans will not stoop so low to steal others' identity just to make ourselves feel good. LOLOL.

World Competitiveness Yearbook 2012: Hong Kong, US and Switzerland most competitive of 59 nations

By Finfacts Team
May 31, 2012 - 7:23 AM

IMD, the Swiss business school, today announced the findings of its annual World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY). The WCY 2012 rankings measure how well countries manage their economic and human resources to increase their prosperity. The most competitive of the 59 ranked economies in 2012 are Hong Kong, the US and Switzerland. Despite all its setbacks, the US remains at the centre of world competitiveness because of its unique economic power, the dynamism of its enterprises and its capacity for innovation. Ireland's ranking has risen from 24th in 2011 to 20th place in 2012.

"US competitiveness has a deep impact on the rest of the world because it is uniquely interacting with every economy, advanced or emerging. No other nation can exercise such a strong 'pull effect' on the world. Europe is burdened with austerity and fragmented political leadership and is hardly a credible substitute, while a South-South bloc of emerging markets is still a work in progress. In the end, if the US competes, the world succeeds!" said Professor Stephane Garelli, director of IMD's World Competitiveness Center.

The most competitive nations in Europe are Switzerland (3), Sweden (5) and Germany (9), which have export-oriented manufacturing and fiscal discipline. Meanwhile, Ireland (20), Iceland (26) and Italy (40) look better equipped to bounce back than Spain (39), Portugal (41) and Greece (58), which continue to scare investors.

Emerging economies are not yet immune to turmoil elsewhere. China (23), India (35) and Brazil (46) have all slipped in the rankings, while Russia (48) climbed only one place. All Asian economies have declined apart from Hong Kong (1), Malaysia (14) and Korea (22). Latin America also had a tough year, with every nation falling except Mexico (37).

Globalization and economic reform under threat

One-third of the 329 ranking criteria come from an exclusive IMD survey of more than 4,200 international executives, which reveals a growing skepticism in some of the 59 economies toward globalization and the need for economic reforms (see charts).

Globalization is still seen as a positive development in Ireland, Scandinavia, Chile, the UAE and many Asian economies. But attitudes are much more negative in Greece, Russia, most of Eastern Europe, a growing part of Latin America, and, last of all, in France.

IMD says attitudes toward reforms are more positive in Ireland (not true in respect of Irish domestic reforms), emerging Asia, Qatar and the UAE, Switzerland and Sweden. But the impetus for reform is much weaker in Argentina, the Czech Republic, Spain, and lastly – again – in France, where austerity is seen as a cure worse than the disease.

"The recession has made the world economy more fragmented and diverse than ever, forcing companies to operate several parallel business models," said Professor Garelli. "Emerging economies are relying on domestic demand and national champion companies to insulate themselves from economic turmoil, while the "submerging" developed economies are turning to re-industrialization. In both cases, economic nationalism is back and protectionism is tempting."

Ireland

IDA Ireland, the State inward investment agency "welcomed the news that the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2012 ranks Ireland very favourably in a number of key areas important for Foreign Direct Investment."

"The influential data, used by global companies, location consultants and professional firms, highlights that Ireland possesses an extensive pool of highly skilled graduates available to a range of industries, among them ICT, life sciences, financial services and digital media. Executives in the survey pinpoint Ireland’s skill base as a key attraction of the country as an inward investment location."

World Competitiveness Yearbook 2012: Hong Kong, US and Switzerland most competitive of 59 nations; Ireland rises to 20th ranking

Congratulations to Hong Kong.

Far out! This guy shelly, going by his posts, obviously is a third grader in economic and he want to be a CEO in Singapore after he received his citizenship. LOL, such an ignorant boastful talker!

I dont have to boast about indians from india in sgp, because they look at us with awe

Man I don't think you're an Indian because you embarrass the Indian people too.

Yet mainlander have to apply for visa to work in HK!!

first i never said dual citizenship. India has a concept of OCI (Overseas citizen of india) which is a PR like thing given to indian origin people.I already have a PR last 4 years or so.
second i dont have to explain why i am taking a citizenship and I am not miserable here unlike many. Ironically, i was convinced of taking this up by a colleague from PRC.
I live in a condo not HDB. I have never lived in one and dont ever intend to.
I am on shift work at NY hours and wrote that from home.
Tell me one instance where I have lied. If u prove I lied, I will not take up citizenship, if you cant then you have to apologize.

Finally about integrity.. i have never utilized any perks offered by singapore for PR .. ever. My child was born in a private hospital without any funds. I intend putting him in an international or Indian school. After citizenship I do not intend taking any subsidy for new hdb (I cant because of cooling measure but thats another story).
I have paid my taxes, i volunteer at some charity org for the blind, i give talks to college kids on the industry as my service. All this in return for being allowed to work here and not touching 1 cent of the state in terms of subsidy. Even my medical is thru my companys insurance.

Far out! This guy shelly, going by his posts, obviously is a third grader in economic and he want to be a CEO in Singapore after he received his citizenship. LOL, such an ignorant boastful talker!

slight correction, I dont look at PRC with awe, I look at them as "aawww.. poor thing".
I wil become CEO of a company i start. do you have a problem.

Am I the only one to think that this kind of ranking is kind of useless? It doesn't factor in a lot of stuff. "How well countries manages their economic and human resources" can be interpreted in a lot of ways. Hong Kong is a city that literally cannot "lose" because of its financial hub status, same with Singapore. In good economic time, HK gets money to provide service to people wanting to invest in China and to export more products to the world. In bad economic time, HK gets money from people wanting to sell their Asian investment or to short-sell stocks.

It's the same thing with Singapore and Switzerland, small financial hubs attached to bigger regional economy that will make money from service no matter what happens.

The US benefits from having "unlimited" resource in the form of a world reserve currency, which they can print as much as they need to attract talents from the entire world (at the expense of inflation to the poor, of course). Other countries benefits from "easy money" in the form of plentiful resources like oil, minerals, or lumber.

The way I sees it...the most competitive in that list should really be Taiwan, followed by Germany. It's not easy managing a successful economy with absolutely no natural resources relative to the population and not being a financial hub. It means people in those country actually work hard and efficiently to produce products that people want.

I agree with what you said about the ranking being useless, but disagree on Singapore & Hong Kong cannot lose due to the financial hub status.

I will speak more from a Singapore perspective, firstly Singapore is not an international trading desk it’s more a Wealth Management centre for South East Asia and finance really plays a small part on Singapore GDP. We have other things like shipping, oil refining etc which play bigger roles. Money as we know flows in an out, the minute Singapore has an air of doubt people will start moving money to Switzerland before you know it.

Firstly we have no natural resources only a population of talented people and strong government, the government has to try and ensure the citizens standard of living is met while ensuring cost is low. To ensure there are jobs for everyone (not everyone works in finance) the government has to ensure the talent pool meets what the industry needs, 10 years ago it was engineers now its games and graphics designers. The government is trying to keep one step ahead of competition and goes even to the stage of trying influence the students what to study. And of course to get the companies interested in starting up in Singapore barriers of entry has to be low. Why rent a shop in Singapore at 20,000 USD per month when you can rent the same size shop for 2000 USD in Malaysia.

Hong Kong and Singapore though similarly sized are vastly different in nature, we depend on Indonesia for Gas to power our generators and Malaysia for water. Both of which we should gain independence of in about 10 years time. We have to sustain a defence team which also zaps our labour force. All food has to be imported. The list I assure you is endless
We have limited land, neighbours who control our chokepoints, declining population supplemented by migrants. If we are not competitive how else do we survive, we do not have the luxury to compete in manufacturing so have to constantly up the ante. F1 night racing & Casinos for tourism, biosciences (for next generation) etc are just an example of the extend the government is taking. Fyi manufacturing was our strong point but there is no point competing with China.

Can it be honestly and openly said we are non competitive? If Germany rested on their laurels for 5 years I am very sure they will still have food on the table simply because they can grow it.

To CD
Thanks for the encouragement on the thread  I arrived late lol

I welcome migrants who contribute to Singapore economy positively and as long as they are willing to integrate with our manner of live (strange as it may sometimes be). I work with an Indian lady from Mumbai and honestly I couldn't tell that she was not from Singapore. She works hard and is humble though voices her opinions too loudly :P I very much would welcome her as she has made Singapore her home

slight correction, I dont look at PRC with awe, I look at them as "aawww.. poor thing".

All I can say is: Good luck to you and your company. BTW try to polish up your reading skill too while you at it.

Don't agree with that, if your humble and modest you get more respect.

Chinese Singaporeans built Singapore from the ground, you are welcome to contribute and even make Singapore your home. But we are one community.

I never said Chinese SGP did not make Singapore. They are the major contributors and LKY family had the vision. But there are many many Indians who have contributed too and played invaluable support roles. eg NTUC was conceived by an indian origin person.
I have had a great experience here in SGP so far. I feel i have contributed ecnomically but i feel i havent emotionally given much thats why i try to volunteer but still something is missing i feel.
