I personally won't hire maids.
But I can understand why: imagining you can hire a maid who will take care all house works 6 days per week and you only pay 400-500 USD a month.
If you don't mind an outside people stay with your family, it really free you from all the pains.

A lot of these types of people are very opportunistic and stingy at heart. They think because they are paying someone a salary and sheltering them, that they basically own the person and have the right to use every ounce of their energy. Imagine living with your boss 24/7,it must be a nightmare. I have known of many Au pair situations in the US involving Latin Au pairs and the circumstances become very abusive and slave like. I can imagine it’s even worse in HK where the locals are already rude and selfish at heart.

Its like a status symbol to own a maid, except that a lot of the people with maids in Hong Kong aren't even well off enough to warrant needing a maid. Then the abuse comes in and the need to squeeze all the value out of their domestic servants in order to make economic sense.

Depends on how many of them.
A few years back, there was too many of them, and so we complained through our votes.
Singapore is an immigrant nation, and there are only so many of us.
There are many types of jobs that we locals prefer not to do.
I am not going to fight with the Indian foreigner over that job to clear the rubbish and sewage.
If managed properly, immigrant workers can help us grow, win win.
It is all about growing the pie, not a zero sum game.

Problem is foreigners in management positions have a tendency to employ their own.
There is now a requirement to employ locals first.
If companies are found to give preference to foreigners over locals, we can make a complain against them.

I don't think so. Economics is not a zero-sum game. In any economic structure, there must a be certain percentage of low-end jobs which needs to be filled. The majority of low-end jobs are taken by foreigners, so that frees up better jobs for Singaporeans. There are Singaporeans who will be hard-hit by the competition, but they have negative income tax (workfare) and cheap public housing.

Given that Workfare payouts act as a negative income tax for low-wage workers, Singapore's tax schedule actually spans "minus 30 per cent to plus 20 per cent", or 50 percentage points, as Mr Tharman noted last week.

The figures speak for themselves. Unemployment rates are low and real incomes have seen sustained growth, even among the bottom 10% of households. This is very rare among developed countries which have seen stagnant or declining real incomes even at the middle class.

But you ignore there are people who possess certain special abilities in particular industry sectors that they can do more efficiently than others.
So much so that they sought after such jobs and you will find a preponderance of different people in certain industries.

Some of us may be put off by sewage but not everybody.
This is an advantage of having a multi-culture society, with the right mix of people.
