Back then it was controlled by local rich powerful Arab landlords and their territory was under Ottoman jurisdiction. Most of the Palestinians inhabiting and using the land did not OWN the land actually but only a few rich landlord families. Now after the Ottoman Empire ended the British came and colonized the area. In the meantime Zionists (read about the Zionism movement) had been arriving from mainly Europe, some of them sponsored by wealthy Jewish families such as the Rothschild family (hardcore Zionists) and then they bought large areas of that land from those Arab landowners. At that point nobody knew what might could follow afterwards.

In hindsight that move (selling land to foreign Jews) was a grave mistake but I am CONVINCED that the powerful Zionism movement would have found another way to impose their will on the locals. The locals were mostly impoverished and lived of fishing, agriculture etc. It was also fairly sparsely populated back then.

That isn't a good argument at all. The point is that from the start there was an intent to displace Palestinians and give their homeland to Jews, way before Hitler!!
