In the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic affecting Indians abroad, the government’s focus will be on six West Asian countries, which are home to seventy percent of India’s citizens who live abroad, according to data on overseas Indians maintained by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

There are 12.6 million non-resident Indians (NRIs), those holding an Indian passport but ordinarily residing outside the country, spread across more than 200 nations, according to the MEA. But 8.9 million of them live in just six countries.

Among them, the largest number of Indians, 3.4 million, live in the United Arab Emirates, which is approximately 27% of all NRIs around the world. Another 2.6 million are in Saudi Arabia while Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain were home to another 2.9 million NRIs.

For now, stranded Indians around the world, including workers and students, have been asked to stay where they are. A person familiar with the decision-making behind this position said, “This approach was adopted because of the suspension of international flights and the lack of adequate quarantine facilities in India following the coronavirus outbreak.”

But there have been mounting calls from stranded Indians to be allowed for various reasons. Some are students facing problems with food and accommodation because their hostels have been closed; others are workers who have lost their jobs; and others who simply wanted to be with their families in these challenging times.

By the third week of April, some 2,500 Indians had approached the Indian missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai alone to seek help to return home, according to reports in local media. Authorities in Delhi have not made public the number of Indians who have sought to return from the Middle East, saying the situation is dynamic and changing rapidly.

The UAE government has been pressing governments in South Asia to allow the repatriation of workers who want to return home and has even offered to fly them out. This includes workers who have been laid off because the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

Indians in the West Asian countries also account for annual remittances of over $40 billion, though most experts feel the figure will be far lower this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic coupled with the steep fall in crude oil prices. The World Bank has already estimated that remittances will shrink by 20% globally in 2020, while India, the biggest receiver of remittances, could witness a decline of 23%.

Talmiz Ahmad, who served as India’s envoy to Saudi Arabia, said at the moment, it was not clear how many Indians will return. He said it was also heartening that the West Asian states such as the UAE had shown understanding for India’s inability to bring back its expatriates. “We didn’t have facilities to quarantine people in large numbers and the West Asian states agreed to our request to look after our workers,” he said. “It was also significant that external affairs minister S Jaishankar spoke to several of his counterparts in West Asia and spoke out joint efforts against Covid-19. India also assured there would be no disruptions in food supplies – we are major suppliers of items such as rice and vegetables to these countries,” Ahmad said.

Over the years they built Indian foreign exchange reserves. India has a sizeable trade deficit, hence remittance plugs the gap. Sadly rss types wont thank these NR Indians.

What does any of this have to do with Hindutva ?

Also, a significant % of those 70% will be Muslims.

India did repatriate a lot of it's citizens, and citizens from neighboring countries (SL, Maldives, Nepal, BD etc) in the early days of the pandemic from China.

There's videos of Pakistani students complaining that they've been left behind as they filmed Indian students being evacuated from Wuhan.

Not much later, the situation went to shit, the country was locked down and all foreign carriers were barred and domestic ones grounded. There's a lot of foreigners stuck in India too because there are no flights operating. The handful of repatriation flights back to Europe and the US etc that were operating had exorbitantly priced tickets, so a lot of people chose to stay back and ride it out in India.

Can u clarify How many of those residing in west Asian Arab states were Muslims and how many were non Muslims
Most Hindus , Christians and Sikhs would choose US, UK, Canada, Australia
Majority working in Middle East are menial labourers involved in construction
They also tend to be majority muslim

. . .
all airline operations remain suspended + no facilities to quarantine a large group, that's why.

What ?

Are you saying the PIA has been flying back all Pakistani citizens back ?

Well, that's great.. hope they ferried the Wuhan students back as well.

you really talk out of your rear end?.. dont you.
It's a fact.

Out of the tens of millions? of Indian citizens living and working in the Gulf, a significant proportion of them are in fact Muslims, most being employed by and involved in these essentially slave labour jobs... plenty Pakistanis and BD folk there too.

The decision regarding the Wuhan students stands vindicated. Even if some of them were apprehensive about it - which is understandable - they have all escaped serious harm from the virus itself, serious harm from any difficulties in a variably organised lockdown situation and serious risk of being silent spreaders to their household members back in Pakistan. Khan did many things wrong but this decision was spot on. Overall, the Wuhan students are grateful for having been made to stay put.

Nobody has a problem with India having a third world infrastructure. The problem is that India should simply accept this reality instead of projecting a false impression that all will be fine and under control. It is far better to demonstrate transparency in any epidemic scenario. All nations should accept their realities, ask for help as needed and do whatever they can within their limitations.

So far, both Pakistan and India have just been lucky. That could change dramatically when an inevitable spike occurs in south Asia when lockdowns are lifted.

Arright man, good to know your Wuhan crew is OK. I took no pleasure whatsoever in watching those hapless Pakistani students in those videos, they were just so dejected and scared.. any normal person would want the hell out of a plague hotspot asap !

Who is projecting anything ? In his first lockdown address to the nation, Modi Ji made it clear that we have to do this because other much richer countries with better health and medical infrastructure have been overwhelmed, and that we can not allow for such a situation to occur in our country.

Transparency what ?

Not projection, then.. right ?

and let us please both hope that no such spike is witnessed in this part of the world, I don't want anyone dying from lack of ventilator availability or funds anywhere on earth.
