The State government appears to have backtracked on its stand that onion and garlic be introduced in mid-day meals served to students. It has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Akshaya Patra Foundation (APF), a subsidiary of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), despite the latter’s refusal to use the two ingredients.

In November last year, the Department of Primary and Secondary Education had directed the foundation to use onion and garlic in food preparations. When the foundation refused to do so, the CEO of Bengaluru (Urban) Zilla Panchayat put the MoU, which had to be signed in April 2018, on hold.

In Bengaluru alone, APF provides meals to 1.83 lakh students in 1,212 schools.

“Akshaya Patra Foundation refused to include onion and garlic. We could not make alternative arrangements to provide food, and had to yield,” said an official, adding that the issue is yet to be resolved.

In February, reports by the National Institute of Nutrition stated that the menu by APF was in compliance with the nutritional guidelines suggested by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

The Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) said that it is yet to study samples from schools which received food from the foundation to see if the meals met or exceeded the energy and protein norms of the MHRD. But, CFTRI also stated that the contribution of onion and garlic towards macro and micro nutrients is negligible.

While CFTRI had earlier stated that onion and garlic enhance the bioaccessibility of iron and zinc from foodgrains, in its report submitted in February, it said that ingredients such as drumstick, turmeric, lime and jeera are also known to enhance bioaccessibility of micronutrients.

According to MHRD norms, food supplied to lower primary students should have 450 kcal energy and 12 grams of protein, while food supplied to upper primary classes should have 700 kcal and 20 grams protein.

M. R. Maruthi, Joint Director of the Midday Meal Scheme in Karnataka, said that while the MoU had been signed, the Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretary of the department are yet to take a call on inclusion of onion and garlic.

The move has not gone down well among public health experts and activists who have urged the State government to end the contract with APF.

Sylvia Karpagam, a public health doctor and researcher, said the larger issue is that children were not eating adequate quantities of the midday meals as it was not tasty. “Not including onion and garlic in the midday meals is a cultural imposition,” she said. She added that the State Food Commission had received complaints that students were not eating the meals as they were not familiar with food that did not use onion and garlic.

Christians, dalits aur Muslims ko to khana do na onions and garlic.
Every gravey or stew or rice dish is made from them. Even dal is incomplete without tarka of garlic and onion.
You really are limiting the option to eating boiled rice..
Even vegetables ate alive and feel pain.. Don't eat them too.

Most of the younger Hindus I know are enthusiastic beef consumers. Beef is right up their alley and as we all know, beef just doesn't taste right without garlic and onion added. :-)

The hypocrisy of 2 -3% Hindutva Brahmanists, while their kids relish beef , they force their satvik food diet upon non brahmin students , who constitute 98 % of Indian population.

Why brahmins are against garlic and onion ? Is there any scientific reason ? Or is it another hogwash manufacturer by vedic brahmanist ?

Possibly something about both of these vegetables growing under the ground.

Per this page,
  • "According to Ayurveda, foods are grouped into three categories - sattvic, rajasic and tamasic - foods in the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance. Onions and garlic, and the other alliaceous plants are classified as rajasic and tamasic, which means that they increase passion and ignorance.
  • Ahinsa - In Hinduism, killing is prohibited (even of microbes). So ground food needs proper cleaning, which causes the death of micro-organisms.
  • Some even say that meat, onion, and garlic can cause behavioral changes if consumed in high quantity. It's also related to Ayurvedic categorization."
and,

"As per the scripture, garlic, onion and mushroom are prohibited for Brahmins because they are considered impure as they generally grow in the place of impurity. Brahmins need to maintain purity as they worship gods who are sattvic (pure) in nature."

I can understand though, why a lot of Hindus don't follow these rules any longer.....all three ingredients are delicious and definitely among my favorites, especially if fried and used as a garnish...!

These diets are designed to increase the concentration and improve the learning skills.

here is the link the head is a Jain. Hindus do eat Garlic but Jains do not.

Gone are the days when church sponsored idiots used to disrupt development and Programs that are aiding people to remove poverty and bring empowerment.

Church sees the opportunity to convert as long as the masses are kept poor and bigoted.

India do not need any one to lecture us in this regard. We do not need foreign funding and church should wrap up its malicious campaigns in India. Simply saying .... they should get out !!!

We have been supplying food for 18 years now, no issues have cropped up in that time. I don’t know what basis on which these allegations have been made, these are all the efforts of some leftists. If they want to take up the effort of providing these meals to children, we have no issue. But how many people have actually come forward stating that they would do so?” Pai said.Mentioning the recent CBI raids in Tamil Nadu on a company called Christy Foods that has been accused of mass corruption in the mid-day meal scheme, Pai said, “Who knows exactly who may gain from this? There have been several allegations against others who’ve taken up the initiatives, recently in Tamil Nadu. Instead of fresh food, readymade dishes were being served. We provide fresh nutritious food adhering to all guidelines issued by the government of India.”

Propagandist wants to buy their ready made food for a price rather than free akshaya patra meals ..Give free meals if you want but don't do propaganda for a private company..
