As the anti-Rohingya rhetoric on social media rises, photographs of children are being misused in the divisive propaganda.

As the anti-Rohingya rhetoric on social media in India grows, fake narratives are being spun around photographs of children as part of a divisive propaganda.

This is likely to get worse in the coming days as India woke up to news that Myanmar’s army had discovered a mass grave of 28 Hindus in Rakhine. The Burmese army has blamed Muslim Rohingya militants for the killings. (Read –Mass grave of 28 Hindus found in Myanmar: army)
BOOM came across two instances in the last 24 hours where fake stories were weaved around actual photos of children. The reactions and comments on these posts show that they have been extremely effective in stirring religious bigotry.

Ravinder Sangwan, who goes by the Twitter handle @Shanknaad and who is followed by Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, tweeted the below image of a little girl holding an infant. The image appears to be a screenshot from a BBC News video

Sangwan claimed that the girl was 14 years old and had two children. He also claimed she was married to a 56-year old man who had six wives and 18 children.
But Sangwan’s story is a figment of imagination. BOOM traced the screenshot to BBC News’ video – ‘In the jungle with Rohingya refugees feeling Myanmar ‘ uploaded on YouTube on September 4th.

In the video, BBC’s correspondent Sanjoy Majumder is seen trekking alongside people fleeing Myanmar. The girl in the image can be seen at 2 minutes and 06 seconds. The girl is not mentioned in the clip proving that the backstory given to her by social media is fake.

We found the exact same fabricated story on a right-wing Facebook page called ‘India Rising’.

Once again, his story turned out to be fake. Umrao subsequently deleted his tweet when called out by BOOM on Twitter.

BOOM found a Facebook post going back to November 2016 which contained several photos of the girl. The post in Portuguese states that Sandy Brandão da Cruz, 12, a resident of the city of Garrafão do Norte, Pará (Brazil) was hospitalized at the Barros Barreto Hospital in Belém. She was suffering from a problems of the liver and spleen.

It’s not just Hindu or Buddhists nationalists who are guilty of using fake images online to rally support.

The fresh outbreak of violence in Rakhine since August 25th has sparked a steady stream of inflammatory but nevertheless fake images from both sides that are muddying public opinion about the conflict.

Tracing the person addressed in the internal messages leaked by members of Hindu Samhati on which National Herald had carried a story earlier , the NH investigative team contacted Santosh Kumar whose Facebook profile describes him as Convenor, BJP Trade Cell, South 24 Paraganas (W) and Observer at BJP, West Bengal, through the help of a right wing source.

He confessed to his involvement in planning and executing terror activities in written correspondence with this source and accepted that there were indeed plans to create communal disturbances after Shastra Puja on Vijayadashami. This year, a team consisting of some senior leaders has been formed which will be carrying out violent activities in different parts of Bengal, he said. Earlier, members of this group were responsible for attacking Tiljala mosque after which the Muslims were forced to stop their daily prayers for two days, he added. Though a shadowy group, he claimed it has the support of many members of the party.

Most of the people named in the list hold prominent positions in the party. From general secretary of district BJP units to leader of its Mahila Morcha, leaders from almost every wing of the BJP found a place on this list disclosed by Santosh Kumar. The pictures of some of these people named by Santosh reveal a strange relationship between them and the BJP leadership in the state and the Centre. One or more of them are seen in photographs with BJP’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, Union Minister Smriti Irani and Roopa Ganguly, BJP MP from West Bengal. Why are these prominent national faces of the BJP clicking pictures with people who are named by their fellow party colleague of trying to foment communal trouble in the state?

In the conversation, Santosh claimed Dilip Ghosh, West Bengal state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, is well aware of these attacks on the mosques. He also claimed that he had personally handed over proposals to Dilip Ghosh to start arms factories in the state and on his plans to foment communal trouble by throwing beef into Hindu temples. Santosh seemed agitated that Dilip Ghosh, “in spite of having so much to capitalise on,” was not doing enough and instead just asked him to be in touch with the district president of the party.

He also said that when he approached district president Abhijit Das with his plans, he dissuaded him by saying, “Why do you do these things? These are the tasks of the RSS people.”

A dejected Santosh then wrote to one “Rajnathji” as can be seen from the screenshot of the conversation. One wonders if he was referring to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. It is up to the Union Minister to clarify whether he had ever been approached by Santosh Kumar and what that correspondence, if any, was about.

The team has recruited members from different parts of the state. Logistic support is provided by BJP’s allied organisations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bajrang Dal. According to Santosh, eight to 10 members of the present group have been trained by these groups to use weapons and carry out action during Durga Puja. The team consists of nearly 400 members from the South 24 Paraganas, including some prominent members of BJP’s Bengal unit. The names of the prominent members of this team as disclosed by Santosh are:

What is perhaps more astounding is even President of India Ram Nath Kovind and West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi can be seen in pictures with some of these names revealed by Santosh.

Right now, according to Santosh’s own admission, the group possesses two illegal country-made guns, smuggled from Bihar, and bombs. However, Santosh Kumar says getting more bombs as and when required is no problem. In his words, Nimai, Raja, Monty, Subhash, and Sushil will be arranging for the explosives while nearly all members have swords and lathis. He even poses with a gun in a few pictures.

On being asked the whereabouts of the bombs, he just said, “we haven't kept them in our homes.” The location remains undisclosed till now but Santosh claimed that all these facts are also known to one Kailashji. Now was he referring to Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP’s state in-charge of West Bengal? He said he approached Kailashji and apprised him of everything. However, in a different context, Santosh obliged our source with the screenshot of an e-mail complaint that he wrote against a party functionary. The e-mail is addressed to Kailash Vijayvargiya and BJP’s national joint secretary Shiv Prakash and has Amit Shah copied on the same along with Arnav Mitra, Suraj Kumar Singh and Rajesh Surana who were all mentioned by Santosh as members of his core team built to foment communal trouble in Bengal.

With BJP having gained a foothold in Bengal, it is now working to extend its footprint by raising the false alarm of Hindus being attacked by Muslims, thus instigating young Hindus to take up arms. While the evidence of the same can be found from various parts of Bengal since early 2016, the agenda is to create widespread trouble. The confessions made by Santosh Kumar is startling as they reveal that a terror module is at work where members of the party ruling at the Centre are involved in spreading terror and communal trouble in a state ruled by an Opposition party.

An Indian analyst, in a piece published in Hindustan Times, has acknowledged that the Indian spy agency the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) has ties with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Bharat Karnad, professor for national security studies at the Centre for Policy Research and author of “Why India is Not a Great Power (Yet)”, writes, “Severing relations with TTP will mean India surrendering an active card in Pakistan and a role in Afghanistan as TTP additionally provides access to certain Afghan Taliban factions.”

This, he added, together with “the Abdul Ghani regime’s desire for India’s presence and the tested friendship with Abdul Rashid Dostum and his Tajik-dominated ‘Northern Alliance’, ensures that no solution for peace in Afghanistan can be cobbled together without India’s help”.

Dhaka: A consignment of weapons used during the Dhaka cafe attack that killed 20 foreigners, including an Indian girl, was modified in India before it was transported to Bangladesh in mango baskets, a media report claimed today.

"We have come to know that the modification of these arms was done in Munger city in Bihar state of India and then they came to Chapainwabganj border," Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime chief Monirul Islam said.

"A seal from a factory in Bihar was found on the three AK22 rifles recovered after the Gulshan terror attack," Islam was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune.

Myanmar tells UN: 'There is no ethnic cleansing and no genocide' of Rohingya

Myanmar has rejected allegations of systematic atrocities against the Rohingya, telling the United Nations security council that “there is no ethnic cleansing and no genocide in Myanmar”.

The denial followed a damning open session on the crisis in which the UN secretary-general António Guterres said the conflict had become “the world’s fastest developing refugee emergency and a humanitarian and human rights nightmare”.

More than half a million minority Rohingya Muslims have fled an army campaign in just a few weeks, escaping Myanmar into Bangladesh.

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, lambasted the government of Aung San Suu Kyi for the bloodshed. “We cannot be afraid to call the actions of the Burmese authorities what they appear to be: a brutal, sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority,” she said. “And it should shame senior Burmese leaders who have sacrificed so much for an open, democratic Burma.”

But Myanmar’s national security adviser U Thaung Tun denied the accusations. “I can assure you that the leaders of Myanmar, who have been struggling so long for freedom and human rights, will never espouse policy of genocide or ethnic cleansing and that the government will do everything to prevent it,” he said.

He repeated a government line that 50% of Muslim villages in north Rakhine state, the heart of the violence, remain intact.

The violence, the latest and most deadly upsurge in years of government oppression and communal hatred between Rohingya and Buddhists in Rakhine, exploded on 25 August when Rohingya insurgents attacked army posts.

A ferocious counteroffensive has destroyed more than 200 Muslim villages, which have been shown by satellite imagery to have been burned. Refugees in Bangladesh has recounted horrific stories of rape, mass murder and infanticide.

U Thaung Tun said Myanmar was “concerned by reports that thousands of people have crossed into Bangladesh” but said the country needed to “fathom the real reasons for the exodus”, which he blamed on “terrorists”.

But Masud Bin Momen, Bangladesh’s representative to the UN, said it was evident why people were escaping. “Any individual among the new arrivals would make it known why this exodus is continuing. They all narrate use of rape as a weapon to scare families to leave,” he said.

“Available reports suggest that villages after villages have been burnt; people have been looted and abused in the Rakhine state. These atrocities attest that the Myanmar government is using arson to depopulate northern Rakhine and take over ownership of lands.”

Myanmar has blocked aid access to the region for United Nations humanitarian agencies, preventing civilians in the conflict zone from receiving food, water and medicine. Meanwhile, aid workers in Bangladesh warn of a humanitarian catastrophe for hundreds of thousands of refugees kept in muddy camps over the border.

The BBC reported on Friday that the head of the UN in Myanmar had been accused of mishandling the long-standing issue by prioritising development in impoverished Rakhine over pushing for Rohingya rights.

It cited Caroline Vandenabeele, former head of office for UN resident coordinator Renata Lok-Dessallien, who said raising the Rohingya problem had negative consequences for UN staff. “An atmosphere was created that talking about these issues was simply not on,” she was quoted as saying.

The UN in Myanmar said it strongly disagreed “with the accusations that the resident co-ordinator ‘prevented’ internal discussions”.
