Meerut villagers to move PMO against Godse temple - The Hindu
The controversy over the Hindu Mahasabha’s plan to build a temple for Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, took an interesting turn on Sunday when thousands of villagers resolved at a rally that they would not allow the temple to come up.
The development comes a day after civil society activists sought to counter the Mahasabha’s “propaganda” against Mahatma Gandhi and the historical facts about his assassination. The villagers also decided to approach the Prime Minister’s Office.
Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena chief Amit Jani speaks in Meerut on Sunday against the plan for a Godse temple.
UPNS to hold mahapanchayat against 'Godse temple' Sunday | Zee News
Saturday, January 3, 2015
Meerut: Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena (UPNS) has convened a mahapanchayat of 40 villages on Sunday in protest against the construction of a "temple" dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.
The mahapanchayat will be held at Rohta, 20 kms from here, UPNS national president Amit Jani said here.
"All those who oppose the construction of Godse temple are invited to the mahapanchayat," he said.
Recently, activists of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) had allegedly performed a ceremony here for construction of a "temple" dedicated to Godse, following which the administration ordered a probe into the matter.
Jani said UPNS will also hold a non-violent protest at ABHM's office at Sharada road where the temple is likely to be constructed.
"The members will also go on a hunger strike on that day," he said.
UPNS on December 28 had said that they will not let a temple dedicated to Godse be constructed in the district.
Gandhian response to Godse campaign - The Hindu
Gandhians staging a day-long dharna against the ‘glorification’ of Nathuram Godse in Bhopal on Saturday.
To counter the ‘Gandhiji vs Godse’ debate by Hindutva groups, Gandhians and civil society activists launched the “ Gandhi hum sharminda hain (Gandhi, we are ashamed)” campaign in Meerut on Saturday.
While launching the campaign at the Gandhi statue in Meerut, Faisal Khan of Khudai Khidmatgar said civil society could not afford to remain “silent” in the “Gandhiji vs Godse” fight, which he said was a fight of ‘People versus anti-people.’
Mr. Khan, who revived Khudai Khidmatgaar, an initiative of Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, said the campaign would go on till January 30.
It would also involve spreading awareness of Gandhian values among the youth. Civil society activists will distribute leaflets and booklets spreading Gandhi's message.
They would take to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to counter the right wing propaganda.
Major Himanshu of Jal Biradari said the “appreciation” of Godse’s politics — though muted and rare — was “always there.”
“During the last few years Pradeep Dalvi’s play in Marathi, Mee Nathuram Boltoy (I, Nathuram speaking), attacking Gandhi and upholding Godse, drew packed houses in various places in Maharashtra. However, extreme reactionary outfits now feel emboldened to come out in the open with a vengeance. The paperback issue of Godse’s book is already running into its second reprint,” he added.
Terming the ‘bhumi pujan’ for the proposed Godse temple in Meerut by the Hindu Mahasabha as “highly publicised,” Surendar, a local social activist, said support for Godse would ultimately “weaken” India’s fight against terrorism.
