A Hindu girl from Punjab [ Images ] province was kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam and is currently being held in a madrassa, leading Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney said on Friday.

Burney said his rights organisation, the Ansar Burney trust international, had learnt that 15-year-old Gajri, the daughter of Mengha Ram, was abducted by a Muslim neighbour from her home at Katchi Mandi, Liaquatpur, in Rahim Yar Khan district on December 21, 2009.

Gajri's parents later found out that she was being held captive in a madrassa in southern Punjab and that she had been married and converted to Islam, Burney said.

The local administration is refusing to respond to the abduction of the girl, who is not being allowed to leave the madrassa or to speak to her parents, he said.

Burney, a former human rights minister, condemned the forceful conversion of the Hindu girl and demanded her immediate release.

"Pakistan is a state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which oblige authorities to protect religious minorities under international law," he said.

According to the Ansar Burney Trust, on 21 December 2009, Gajri disappeared from the home of her Hindu parents in southern Punjab.

On December 26 last year, the local police station received a letter with an affidavit from the madrassa that said she had "embraced Islam and had married her neighbour Mohammad Salim", Burney said. The letter did not enclose a marriage certificate, he said.

The police did not immediately inform Gajri's parents about the letter even though they had tried to file a first information report after she had gone missing. The parents were discouraged from doing so by the police, Burney said.

Mengha Ram and his wife then contacted Ramesh Jay Pal, vice president of the national peace committee for interfaith harmony.

With his help, the parents met the priest in charge of Darul-Uloom Madrassa in Khanpur, Maulana Abdul Hafeez.

Hafeez reportedly told the parents that Gajri had 'embraced Islam' and she was not allowed to meet her parents.

Where is the so called equality in pakistan, when one person is being forced to convert to Islam against their will.

There will be plenty of people who will bash me for posting this.

When we can have threads bashing India - Toilets, Caste System and what not this thread is also a fair one.

I really doubt the source of news. And even if it is true why are you blaming Muslims in General.Justice should be done with those who abducted the girl but don't blame entire Islam for it.

I am not blaming Islam or Pakistan per se, I am blaming only those people who are forcing Hindu population to convert to Islam by force.

When people on this forum believe what's written in some blogs as gospel truths and bash India, The sources I have provided are more than Credible.

yes justice needs to be done just like justice needs to be done for the millions of christians and muslims in india...

I am more bothered that Pakistani media did not even covered the news than the madrassa. That was really bad.

Do you see it as your duty as a Pakistani to see justice done? To work to see if (1) the story is true, and (2) if it is, to urge the police to take action to free her?

what are you doing here?

I am a simple Pakistani and like most Pakistanis, i am Powerless to do anything.Helping others is a far fledged thing i barely eke out my own living.I am not a wealthy like Zionists.I have to earn my bread from dawn to dusk after that i don't have any energy left even to move out of my chair.

She is not really converted if she is forced to be converted. The conversion cannot be done with force.

The Truth

Agreed sir but than how the madrasa can say that she 'embraced Islam' and why they are not allowing her to meet her parents?

No one can be forced to accept Islam. If he / she is forced, then the conversion didn't take place and he / she is still from the same religion(Hindu, Christian, etc).

I remember a similar case from Quetta. The daughter of our neighbor was first reported as abducted and forcefully converted to Islam (she was Hindu) and kept in some where in internal Baluchistan. Later, she appeared in front of court and told the truth.
She fell in love with the "Suzuki wala" who used to pick and drop her from her school, got converted to Islam and married him. She even refused to go back to her parents not even to visit.
