HEC to offer 10,000 PhD scholarships for US

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) will send 10,000 scholars to the United States for PhD studies in next 10 years.

These scholars will get admissions in agriculture and food security, medical and allied health sciences, energy, water, climate change, advanced digital technology among others.

This was stated by Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal while explaining the Pakistan-US Knowledge Corridor during a video conference session with vice chancellors from across the country on Wednesday.

The HEC chairman, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and executive director Dr. Arshad Ali, were also present on the occasion.

The Pakistan-US Corridor was conceptualized in June 2015 as a result of US-Pakistan Education, Science and Technology working group under the bilateral strategic dialogue.

The minister said that 10,000 PhDs educated in the best US would give spectacular results. “The government is committed to increasing access to higher education and for that purpose sub-campuses and virtual campuses are being established at district level so as to enable aspiring students to gain higher education at their doorstep.”

Dr Mukhtar Ahmed gave an overview of HEC’s efforts for developing human resource and providing state-of-the-art facilities to the higher education institutions. Speaking to Dawn the HEC chairman said all vice chancellors had been directed to prepare students for admissions in top universities of the US.

“Under Pakistan-US Corridor, the students will be prepared in such a manner that they can get scholarships for US universities. In case, the students cannot receive scholarship but succeeded in getting themselves enrolled with top universities of the US, the HEC will bear their expenses,” the chairman said and added every year, at least 1,000 students will be sent to the US for pursing higher education.

.
This will be huge.... and we'll see immediate results. Education should be made priority in Pakistan.

.
Opportunities for higher education for Pakistan's brightest and most talented is always welcome, but what is Pakistan doing to create opportunities so these freshly-minted Ph.Ds can exercise their talents. Not all will become professors.

.
Instead they should invest this money into upgrading the universities. What happened to the previous HEC scholarship programs, how many have returned and how many have defected and I heard many of those who returned did not get jobs so it is much better to spend this money in creating new positions at Universities and starting research programs. No country wastes so much money for causing self-brain drain as Pakistan. The deserving candidates will get those opportunities by winning international scholarships but the poor nation cannot afford to pay for the people who do not return.

Foreign experience is important...
Most will return in time

Hec is also doing great work sending people to china for phd

Even if we eventually do get our unis to top of the world still worth getting foreign experience

Return to what? This is the whole point. Unless there is something to return to, where do you think these Ph.D. will end up? And if I'm a Pakistani Ph.D. student in US, specializing in a STEM subject, and some US company offers me a six-figure salary, stock options, etc., do you think I will return to Pakistan?

Patriotism is a nice idea, but it doesn't keep your stomach full.

Well believe me...all those proceeding to USA for a PhD already have a stomach full and upon return they are offered good placements but it is the wastage of the national resources.

There is a lot to return to...

For qualified professionals...from my class 90% ended up in europe and america...20% are already back

Although i am not one of them yet

Raising kids in a non islamic world ... 2nd degree treatment...

Grass is always green on the other side...

From your nukes to missiles to aircraft to submarine...there are people in all key projects who went outside and came back
..

Even US has realised it... they have banned pak students from nuke sciences

Talent gravitates to where it can flourish. For some, this will surely be in Pakistan, and for some, it might be elsewhere. Overall, it is a good thing.

Yes, I agree it's a good thing. I just hope Pakistan avoids the pitfalls India faced when it set up IIT: whose graduates, lacking opportunities at home, emigrated elsewhere and thrived, all at India's expense.

Very true.

This is very good initiative, some points may b noted as:
Why USA only? European and other countries are good as well.
Will they all return/remain to Pakistan after their Phds?
Why they have to to return to Pakistan? isnt that an scholarship?
What about primary education? you think while nisar khoro type people are power , these project will yield anything essential or substatial.

.
Best way to build the nation is to educate the children. Good luck

.
and then these guys will never come back pakistan they will find jobs there and case closed

Sorry but a lot of IIT grads are now returning to India and get appointment as faculties in either new IITs or old prominent IITs. A lot of them also go on to become faculty of STEM subjects in American colleges like MIT,CALTECH,GEORGIA tech etc. In fact I know couple of faculties that are an alumnus of my college IITM.
Pakistan on the other hand doesn't feature in the list,I mean it's rare to find a Pakistani prof in STEM in MIT etc
