He is Back! Saudis Accepted Musharraf’s Political Life in Pakistan

President Musharraf will return to Pakistan under the banner of the PML(Q)

The former president of Pakistan was flow in on a Royal Saudi plane and accorded full presidential protocol in Riyadh. President Musharraf met the royal king for more than 3.5 hours ’till midnight and then announced that he would be returning back to Pakistan and run for office in the next elections under the banner of of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q). Despite US polling, the President remains immensely popular in certain circles in Pakistan. The Zardari Administration is seen as an acolyte to Mr. Richard Holbrooke’s whims and Mr. Sharif is also seen as a weak player.

Former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf has termed his meeting with Saudi King Abdullah successful during his visit to Riyadh as he was accorded state protocol in the trip, report said. “I was accorded full protocol during my visit to Saudi Arabia to meet King Abdullah, I deem him as my elder brother and can contact with him directly whenever I want,” the former President spoke in a private TV channnel program on Sunday. Musharraf termed his meeting with King Abdullah successful, saying “The meeting remained excellent, adding that the King had some concerns about recent political situation of Pakistan.

Former president Pervez Musharraf says he will soon return to Pakistan to be among the people of the country. Talking to a delegation in London led by Muslim League (Q) leader Amir Muqam, the former president called for unity between two factions of PML-Q. Musharraf said during his rule he did what he think better for the country. “The economy was in good shape in my tenure. Foreign investment was on rise, while the forex reserves were soared to over 16 billion dollar,” former president said. Musharraf was talking after an Iftar dinner hosted by him, which was also attended by former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shaukat Aziz, Federal Minister for Port and Shipping, Babar Ghouri, former foreign minister Gohar Ayub, Engineer Amir Muqaam and Khusro Bukhtiar Ijaz Durrani, Chaudhry Fawad and others.

During his reign, Pakistan achieved an 8% growth rate, and had dramatically improved its defense standing, specially in missile and plane production. The Americans accused him of duplicity in supporting certain Taliban. There was a good amount of prosperity in the country under his eight year rule. Some look at the era with nostalgia though many condemn the Martial law, and the dismissal of the Chief Justice as grave errors on the part of the Musharraf regime. Based on the iftar dinner, the Musharraf team is ready to give Mr. Zardari and Mr. Sharif a run for their money in the next elections.

Those polls dont mean anything. How many actually participate in those polls? Musharraf has a lot of support. Our economy was much better off during his time and now that there are news of US and indian embassies getting acres of land in Islamabad and deploying their marines commandos security guards blackwater, Pakistanis will support Musharraf against Zardari.

Zardari just cares about his self interest, Musharraf cares about the national interest.

he falls on the right end of my equation, and believe it or not, accept it or not, the two loves of my equation, well one of them anyways, hasnt been very kind to the other even though the other has always been "FAITHFUL".

I am not totally sure I understand your meaning. If you mean he was not a good enough friend of the US, I disagree. He did what he believed was best for Pakistan's strategic needs. If the US had difficulties with his approach, the US should have helped him achieve both Pakistan's strategic needs as well as confronting the Taliban and Al Qaeda who were entering Afghanistan and being sheltered in FATA. Musharraf's dealing with the US may have been complicated, but I blame the US for any negative consequences. As I said, Musharraf was just looking out for Pakistan, as he understood its needs. In the last 30 years, Musharraf has been the most modern, honest and patriotic leader Pakistan has had. With the legitimacy conveyed by civil election, I think Pakistan could not do better given the cast of characters from which one could realistically choose.

Well I would love to see Musharraf and everyone to come to task in our country, but trust me if he did actually come to power we will have to draw a new map of Pakistan and lets hope it isn't the size of Jinnahpur, He was a general who promised to kill his own country men lets hope that he doesn't do any such thing in the future.

Just for the record, I am not a pro PML(N) any more. I apologize for the earlier anger however I still feel he would be better than Zardari.

Musharraf is the worst leader we had since Independence.

He has pride for himself and Military alone. He doesn't consider any countryman worthy enough to be respected. No wonder he sold Pakistani's for $2000 each without any trial, conviction and inquiry. He used to block roads with containers, ban TV Channels and abduct countrymen who disagreed with his policies. When he thinks he is right, 170 million people opposing his decision doesn't matter anymore. It is result of his flawed policies that we see un-acceptable influence of Americans in Pakistan.

Those 16 Bullion dollars reserves were proven within a month after he resigned. 170 Bullion rupees were over-due to Power Producers and because of that country saw worst-ever electricity short-fall. This was result of his good governess that inflation rose to 300% and Chapati is at 5 rupees, Milk 40, Vegetables and Fruit 250 times expensive, dropping exports and 60% increased poverty. His "Trickle Down" philosophy has made millions become billionaires but who is talking of poor here.. when Musharraf and Friends are happy, rest of the earthworms in doesn't count anymore.

I don't say he has done nothing for the country. He supported Pakistan Army far more than any previous Civilian Leader but if you consider country in general, then the wounds which Musharraf caused it are still bleeding.

How exactly can Musharaf become President or PM again ? I dont see it happening.

He's relying on his politcal allies like the PML(Q) and MQM.

MQM can get him seats in Karachi , Hyderabd and some other places
PML(Q) can get him a few seats in may be Gujrat and some other places

and thats about it , hes not popular in rural Panjab ( maybe some people in the cities admire him , but these people never vote and their numbers are not large enough to effect the total tally).

PPP, despite Zardari , has a much larger voter base than both PML(Q) and MQM put togther and Nawaz dislikes Musharrf enough that he'll be willing to side with the PPP to ensure that a Musharraf led alliance never has the majority.

He is no longer the COAS and the Army has no reason ( and rightly so ) to become mired in politics again , its not their job.

So how exactly is he going to make his poltical come back as President or PM ?

Realistically speaking he cant do it through the ballot and he cant do it the gun etiher.
