I am ignorant on this topic as i never tried to read about it.

I've never really read much about it either but in Muharram what else is there to watch on almost every other TV Channel ?

I remember watching on TV a re-enactment of Maidan-e-Karbala where they even had sand on the studio set's floor, make-shift boulders/rocks for sitting & swords, spears & shields strewn all over - Kafiii dramatized karteiii haiiin yee loggg huuurr occasion kooo whether its Muharram or whether its Leyla-tul-Qadar !

Muawiya had a treaty with Hassan ibn e Ali RA that he would be the Caliph but He refused and nominated his brother Hussain ibn e Ali RA that he would be made the caliph after Muawiya. Muawiya did not keep his word and elected Yazid as his successor and not only did it broke the treaty but Yazid was by far the worst candidate to be elected for such a position. When Yazid demanded Hussain Ibn e Ali to give bayet to him he refused.Yazid instructed his Governor Walid in Medina to force Hussein ibn Ali to pledge allegiance to Yazid. Hussein refused it and uttered his famous words that "Anyone akin to me will never accept anyone akin to Yazid as a ruler."
Hussein departed Medina He stayed in Mecca and its there and then where he received letters from the people of Kuffah showing their support for him and to come over there he sent his cousin there to look upto the matter and when he went there most people of Kuffah swore allegiance to him but the New Governor of Kuffah upturned the events and his cousin was executed. Hussain Ibn-e- Ali was stopped by many sahabas from moving forward to Kuffah and especially not to take women and children with him but he refused. When he was about to reach Kuffah he and his followers got the news of the execution of his cousin but he did not turn back and continued the journey. If i am not wrong Yazid had given orders to take charge of the pilgrimage and to kill Hussain ibn e Ali if they found him. Sorry if i made any mistake feel free to correct.

You can always as the maternal side of your family - They could correct you better than anyone of us - We don't know much about these things either !

Islamic history is most distorted history, that's why we have hell of differences.

No i am sure about this but people get a little angry if even a little detail is missed out thats to appease them otherwise i am sure about it.

Unfortunately I wasn't - I found what a Shia & what a Sunni is, in Class 3 - Pehleiii tou naaam bhiii nahin suneiii theiii so I don't know much about the doctrinal or historical differences except that which I've read in a few History Books on Islam written by some Western Oriental Historians !
