Half a million Syrian refugees could be resettled to EU: Hungary PM

European Union and Turkish leaders may announce a behind-the-scenes agreement later this week to resettle 400,000 to 500,000 Syrian refugees directly from Turkey to the EU, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Wednesday.

Orban has locked horns with EU partners for years over economic policy, political freedoms and most recently the handling of the migrant crisis, in which the Hungarian leader took a hard line and erected a steel fence along the country's southern border to keep out migrants.

Hungary has firmly resisted the idea of resettlement quotas to distribute more evenly the migrants, most of whom wanted to go to Germany or Sweden.

Speaking to a meeting of Hungarian leaders in Budapest, Orban said he expected intense pressure from Europe to accept some part of those half a million refugees, something he said Budapest could not do.

He added that the agreement has already been floated at a recent EU summit in Malta but was abandoned and not included in the EU-Turkey agreements signed at the weekend in Brussels after its proponents could not gather the necessary support for it.

"The issue (of resettlement) will be a hot potato in the coming period because even though this could be kept in a semi-secret state... someone somewhere - I think in Berlin this week - will announce that 4-500,000 Syrian refugees could be brought straight from Turkey to the EU," Orban said.

"This nasty surprise still awaits Europeans."

He alluded to the deal being orchestrated by Germany, and said it could frame the political discourse in Europe in the next few days and weeks.

"The pressure will be intense on us and the other Visegrad Four countries (Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic)," he said.

"They will portend that once the agreement is made by certain parties - and to avoid diplomatic complications I will not tell you which country Berlin is in - we should not only bring these people to Europe but divide them amongst ourselves, as an obligation."

"It will not be an easy one because obviously we cannot accept it like this."

Half a million is a lot, but dispersed throughout the EU isn't too noticeable or taxing. It's bad if large quantities end up in a single nation though.

Yep,it's true.Oh well,let them come.At least in EE they'll get "a warm welcome" .They will high tail it immediately to Germany .

I've seen they prepared some 2 refugee camps in here but they're made of tents ,out in the country side.At least they'll be keeping them away from populated,urban centers.The peasants weren't to happy to have them near their crops though,we might see some pitchfork justice if they get out of line.

In the latest poll,over 80% of the population is against refugees/inviting terrorism in.

Anyway,even in the Netherlands,there were violent clashes with the Police against a new refugee camp in a small town.The authorities gave up.If the benevolent Dutchies are rioting,than you know what's coming if they keep insisting to bring more of them throughout Europe.

Turkey opened his doors for who run away from civil war and now hosting 2,5 miilion of them. Turkey is one country, on the other side EU contains 28 countries. 500k refugees means 18k for each country. And Turkey will keep hosting 2 million refugees while you only will have 18k.

Either you will accept this or we open the European borders and let them flow into Europe. Any single of them. Be smart guys

You are comparing Turkey (a country that is just next to Syria) with EU countries that are hundreds if not thousands miles away ?
EU has no reasons to bring them in,Tukey has to offer refuge to people fleeing war (Since it is one of the safe country bordering Syria.),just like we offered refuge to thousands of Spanish who fled Franco.
In case of war,we will offer refuge to people coming from the bordering countries,surely not to Syrians,Iraqis whatever...

EU has no reasons to bring them in,Tukey has to offer refuge to people fleeing war (Since it is one of the safe country bordering Syria.),just like we offered refuge to thousands of Spanish who fled Franco.
In case of war,we will offer refuge to people coming from the bordering countries,surely not to Syrians,Iraqis whatever...

What if those countries want to go Europe? We can't spend all our resources on them.

Let me tell you a flip side of that coin.

You are comparing EU with like 14 trillion economy, to Turkey with near a trillion economy. Europe is asking for us to look after, host and keep our borders secure. If the migrants want to go Europe we should simply open the borders and let them go. It's EU problem there after, after all we are not a part of EU.
