No doubt Gen Sharif is doing a good job, a far cry from Gen Kayani. The PA is on a roll thanks to Gen Sharif's efforts to get the army's popularity back. This no doubt has been aided by the lackadaisical attitude of the politicians and poor governance.

Contrast this to how the politicians and bureaucrats in India treat its soldiers! Less said the better. I think we need a coup here to sort out these a$$holes!

I must say, i am very disappointed by this article. It appears that the author write this article while sitting in his office in London rather than coming to Pakistan and assessing the situation on ground.

The reason why Raheel Sharif is so popular is because he is simply doing his job. PERIOD. He has delivered results, he has delivered hope, and this is something we Pakistanis have been looking for so desperately for the last 10 years. All members are welcome to go back to threads that were opened in 2010, the amount of frustration and pessimism is obvious among the members. Now after a long time Pakistan as a Nation is optimistic of the future, we know that our tomorrow is going to be better than our today. General Raheel has infused that hope into his people, and this why he is popular.

I firmly believe that Raheel should not accept an extension, and should instead step down and run for the top job, as a politician. He would win, it would be good for the country's economy and security, not to mention that it would strengthen democratic civil institutions.

Actually it is.... Terrorism is directly funded by corruption in Karachi and Balochistan. RAW is just providing training and Funds to TTP. But there are others who are providing financial means to militancy through extortion and abusive use of power. So much so is the case that Sindh and Punjab police is filled with people of extraordinary criminal records.... They have to be contained for our existence now.

well there is no need for a coup anymore in Pakistan. The public has been pretty much beaten to submission not to speak against the so called military establishment; and the politicians know what they have to do to survive. With every other institution of governance having failed them, the public know that only the military can bring any semblance of order and prevent complete lawless chaos. The current arrangement is probably the most stability Pakistan has ever enjoyed in a long while, so why mess with it.

What everyone has to watch for is whether Gen.RS develops any megalomania as his predecessors did. If he also gets that disease all bets of are off again

The military controls the security and foreign policy, nothing more. The longer civil institutions are allowed to remain in power, the stronger they will become. The military will, eventually, have no choice but to let go of these two things.

Personally, I think it will be a former military man that finally puts civil authorities in complete control of the military.
