Where are the memorials built by US troops to mourn the death of innocent civilians in every nation they cremate?

“Civilization will not last, freedom will not survive, peace will not be kept, unless a very large majority of mankind unite together to defend them and show themselves possessed of a constabulary power before which barbaric and atavistic forces will."

Nonsensical analogies in keeping with the bigotry characterizing the opposition to the mosque.

Japan as a nation brought war to US shores.

The US as a nation brought war to Iraqi shores.

Neither of the above two have any business demanding anything from the nations and people they harmed through deliberate acts of violence.

However, Islam or Muslims as an entity did not bring the 911 attackers to US shores - those attacks were committed by Al Qaeda and OBL - neither of those two entities is behind the organizations building the proposed Islamic Center, nor are they representative of most Muslims.

Were this Islamic Center being demanded by Al Qaeda or its representatives/affiliates (present or future), you might have had a point.

Good move by the community board to remove another hurdle in the way.

That is exactly what his point is,, yeah we all are alqaida .. take care agno maybe sm of these retired special forces ppl gona come for you...:P

'Muslims' have nothing to be remorseful about.

I am a Muslim - the 911 attacks were not carried out in my name nor did I authorize AQ or OBL in anyway to take actions on my behalf. I am not obligated to show any more, or less, sentiment towards the attacks than any other American.
The Japanese analogy is very appropriate. The current Japanese generation can reasonably argue that they have no ties to Imperial Japan. The issue here is the religious factor and how much it influenced and motivated the 9/11 terrorists. For Americans, particularly New Yorkers, we cannot dismiss that factor. A mosque will highlight that factor.

I say we allow the mosque to be built. Just as YOU claimed that you authorized no one to attack US on your behalf, you and others like yourself will likely do nothing WHEN, not if, that mosque attract anti-US speakers and their jihadist sermons. We know these sermons already exists elsewhere. Just as al-Qaeda did not need your permission these imams will also ignore you, meaning muslims who never cared about the 'hijacking' of Islam in the first place, to begin their jihadist agenda and to blatantly insult US at Ground Zero. Americans need to see this side, not of Islam, but of the muslim community.

IMO if the mosque is built, it will create more hatred for Muslims among the americans in future.

I know right? This is a perfect talking point for right wing blogs and fox news. More ammunition for their hate.

Why not build an inter-faith cultural centre. This should take care of all justified and unjustified criticism against the construction of mosque.

Am for that as well. Imagine Christians and Jews worshiping side-by-side in a 'community center' built with muslim money.

Why would a Muslim group build an 'interfaith cultural center'? They are building an Islamic Center to cater primarily to the needs of the Muslims community and project the 'true' side of Islam.

Will Christians, Jews and Hindus stop building Churches, Synagogues and Temples now, and instead construct 'interfaith cultural centers'? What about any existing Churches and Synagogues around Ground Zero? Will they be converted to 'interfaith cultural centers'?

^^Ofcourse, members from other communities should also contribute equally to the building of the center. And construct synagogue, mosque, church, temple or whatever side by side on the ground zero.

Yes, the current Japanese American community could argue they have nothing to do with Imperial Japan, which is why they wouldn't really be asking for a memorial/center commemorating 'Japan' ON the Arizona, nor would one be approved. Japan attacked the US as a nation, Muslims and Islam did not attack the WTC as representatives of all Muslims or Islam, therefore the analogy does not work.

On the other hand, if Japanese Americans want to build a Buddhist temple to cater to their community BY the Arizona on private property, they have every right to do so and should be allowed to do so.

I don't see every Christian-American in the US up in arms over the bigotry and hatred espoused by many American Evangelical Churches, why should every Muslim-American be expected to be up in arms over what a particular mosque does or does not do? If I am part of that Islamic Center's congregation and contribute to it, yes, I have an obligation to speak up about what happens there. But don't expect me to take responsibility for happens in a mosque in New York that I never frequent or support, from my home in Michigan.

My support for the mosque is based on what I perceive to be a matter of principle - a proposed Japanese-American temple by the Arizona on private land would get similar support from me.

Why not ..they should if possible ...it not about Hindu , Muslims , Sikhs or Jews ..it about religious harmony , religious coexistance and Its not about linking a certain religion..to particular act of terror.

An interfaith cultural center on or by Ground Zero is an excellent idea - various religious groups should get together to come up with a proposal. But such a Center does not have to be at the expense of the proposed Cordoba Center, which is being funded primarily by Muslims donors for a particular purpose.

Fine, propose the idea to the Catholic, Protestant Churches and talk to the largest Jewish and Hindu temples and Muslim mosques and see how that goes.

In the mean time, that does not mean the Islamic Center should not proceed.

I'm sure ground zero is big enough to accommodate other religious centers as well. Its a win win situation for everyone concerned.

 is there any competition going on between these faiths to prove their ego??

Anyway whatever the lawmakers decided there will be accepted.

Either they will prove themselves rational and not bigots by linking US Muslims with OBL or they will reject and halt the project forever out of their Islamophobia.

Well if I could..I would...but sadly I can not.

There is and should be no problem in Building a Mosque at ground zero..

But if ppl building the Islamic centre... truly believe in religious coexistence they should pursue this line of action too..they should take the initiative ...something like this will go a long way in inter-community goodwill...promote harmony beyond religious divides.
