Gravitational waves announcement: Scientists confirm detection of ripples in spacetime

So can these gravitational waves be of any use to us?In the interstellar movie, the actor is communicating with his past through the gravitational waves in the 5th dimensional space?is it possible?

proved when?? by who?? how?? how come they have not been employed in space-craft propulsion in space or recreated or amplified for earthly vehicle anti-gravity propulsion??

a simple set questions or points : so according to our phd'ed astronomers, the universe's elements ( galaxies, worlds, stars etc ) are flying away hither-thither from their place of creation or coalescing... flying away to somewhere, and somehow without interference and collisions... so the entire sol solar system is flying away in one piece... what about the extremeties of the universe?? where will the elements go?? will they dash against a wall?? in fact, what are the extremeties of the universe??

and we must of course bow to them without question and we must obey. :D
:o:i didn't think about that---are we going to collide----

No we won't collide. Big bang theory by definition says that Everything in this universe happened because of a big bang. So let's say immediately after the bang the distances between the galaxies (more like clouds of gases at that time) were few thousand kilometers. But because of the bang we're apparently living in an ever expanding universe. Think of it like a shock wave propagating after a bang and because of this expansion the distances between the galaxies now are billions of light years. Shock wave on earth doesn't keep propagating for infinity because of resistance obviously (atmosphere, earth, buildings etc etc). But remember Newton's first law which says 'The object will remain in motion or at rest unless it encounters external force.' And obviously all of this expansion of our universe is taking place in space so there's no external force (resistance) acting on it and hence, the universe will keep expanding.

Don't take movies too seriously . He could have simply used gravity to write black hole's data on paper with pen  instead of using morse code on watch. And how did she know when the code started :D.

quantum physics is another magical field like "space-time". :D

we know that light exists and light can be employed, whether for projecting images ( cinema ) or for cutting up metal ( laser ) or for propelling space-craft ( light sail )... similarly, since you spoke about people having proof of gravitational waves or what the article calls gravitational ripples, i was wondering that just like light can be employed, why couldn't gravitational waves be employed in various things including vehicle propulsion??

or is it that these so-called astronomers simply are preaching mathematics rather than reality?? :)

If you read how they detected these waves you would not be asking this question.

They could detect the change of mass by a very small amount, actually the length, that small change can possibly not be used for propulsion.

Nope, not possible as it was in interstellar movie. Take it as this was, it gives us a new window to look at the construct of the universe.

If you put it into scale, 5 mm change in length for 10^16 m of a structure.

#‎Karachi‬ born Dr.Nargis is one of the main scientists who discovered Gravity waves.
The recently discovered phenomenon was known to theoretical physicists but observed first time.
Gravitational waves are similar to waved produced in a pond when a heavy object such as a stone is thrown in water, except the gravitational waves causes ripples in space time, stretching and squeezing galaxies, stars, planets and time itself.
This strange natural event happens when colossal events disturb space time ,such as explosion and collapse of stars and collision between black holes.

Not possible. Gravitational waves are too weak. We can barely record such a colossal event like colliding of two massive black holes.

Meaning is exploring the universe. For example thanks to gravitational waves we can possible see what happened right after the Big Bang (with electromagnetic means the earliest point is 380 thousands years after the Big Bang, because before that Universe was not transparent).

Also it is another (final) proof for General relativity theory.

@Technogaianist @Nihonjin1051 - What exactly does this mean ?

I was under the impression that Einstein's theories failed at the center of a Black-Hole which is why the String Theory was conceived or so I understood when listening to the theoretical physicist Michio Kaku ! :undecided:

Yes we can use it to travel faster than the speed of light as there is no limit on the expansion/compression rate of "space-time".
