sure, earth's atmosphere would stop any space gas field from directly affecting any gas-filled instrument at sea-level but i was talking about some indirect affect where the space gas field has arrived now in earth orbit from that binary black hole unification in the past, and that gas field generates some electrical activity... i am just guessing.

electrically pumped: run a current through the gas. optically pumped: shine a light on the gas.

indirect effects: not possible. remember that heat scrambles information and any information that does arrive in the form of gas will have been scrambled by billions of lightyears of heat and dust. also, note that waves with conserved energies (or particle beams with conserved particle number) tend to spread out as they travel as 1/r^2. Although not strictly analogous (since a laser is not an isotropic point source), if you run the calculations, you'll find that a 10 MW violet laser that can melt through meters of steel at the km range on earth, will be less threatening than a flashlight if shined from merely the moon due to angular spread.
