Govt nod for two more Arihants

.
I guess, its 3+2 which is 5. The initial plan was to get 5 nuke subs.

.
Explaining the significance of building two more submarines in the context of global security architecture, sources said here on Monday reports indicated that China is also developing its first nuclear-powered submarine.
wait a second first nuke sub??? I though they already had many in their arsenal?! someone clear this up for me?

Yes its 3+2 because of first 3

1. Arihant is out for sea trials

2. Aridaman will out in next year, remember that the L&T have build the hulls for 3 nuclear submarines.

3. If "3" was not approved then how can L&T have build it for?? So obviously it's 3+2 = 5 SSBN for India. :victory::yahoo::cheers:

To send the fear down the spine of enemies. With clear message that don't ever think of mess with India:devil:

Thats good, with Pakistan small economy, it will hurt them more, by spending money on subs.

They are small in everything but they don't understand that its natural we are big in everything land area, population, economy and military. The day they realize the truth there will be peace.

Why take punga with a bigger hulk.

.
May be, its 3+2 i.e. 5. K-15 Missile Test on 4 March...

I think its just a regular check because K-15 has cleared all tests and i think it has even entered into the production. In short by the time the weapons trial will come we will have k-15 for the tests.

If "3" was not approved then how can L&T have build it for?? So obviously it's 3+2 = 5 SSBN for India.
That is the most common explanation but like i said earlier there's also a possibility that this report is hoax just like the follow on order of Scorpene and the number of MMRCA to increase to 260+ . Or DRDO and HSL might have placed the order in advance to build the three hull without getting an approval from MOD. I mean just look at DRDO's project. Unlike in other countries where armed forces gives their requirement to MOD/DOD or whatever and then based on that requirement the project is made but this doesn't happens in India. Also billions of funds where made available for ATV project (which include SSBN + SLBM), its possible that they might have placed order for 3 hoping thaT mod will place order for atleast 3 subs but then MOD might have just said first make the first one and then we will talk.
I am supporting the above hypothesis because first there was always the question about the success of this project and secondly SSBN's are expensive especially considering IN wants 9 SSN/SSGN to support the 3 SSBN and if number of SSBN increases, so will the number of SSN/SSGN.

I hope the number of SSBN is increased to 5 but we should wait to get more reports on this development.

but also propel India into the top league of five nations including US, Russia, France, Germany and UK which have such sophisticated platforms.
Germany never had nuclear subs.It should be US, Russia, France, Britain and China.

sources said here on Monday reports indicated that China is also developing its first nuclear-powered submarine.
The Chinese have already operated the Type 91 and Type 93 Classes of SSN's and Type 92 and Type 94 class SSBN's.They are now developing the Type 95 and Type 96 Class SSN and SSBN respectively.

Frankkly i think this is more of the official confirmation that Navy will order more than 3 SSBN
as far as I remember , Indian Navy had decided to go in for 4th Arihant class sub , as far back as 2010
Now it seems they have decided to order the 5th sub

its quite simply the fact that
ATV 3 is a much larger and an improved design over INS Arihant and INS Arhidaman ,
weighing some 7800 Ton and carrying 50-80 % higher number of Nuclear Warheads , so it was obvious that Indian Navy will not limit the improved design to just 1 boat
so my guess is that it will 3+2
However , if we are going for a 5th sub then
That will delay the Indian SSN project , under which IN was initially was meant to induct 4 SSN between 2022-28
This additional order will delay the SSNs to yr 2025-32

No it is either...1+2 or 3+2. I am saying this because First one as we all know is INS Arihant. Now in early 2010 there were reports of the completion of hull of 2nd and 3rd Arihant Class SSBN at L&T shipyad and they were about to be transported to Vizag. A few months back the news came about the work started on one of these hull (2nd Sub also known as INS Aridhaman). So there are three possibilities....

1) Either this is the follow on order i.e. now the total is 5. Which was always a possibility.

2) Or The work on 2nd and 3rd sub started even before MOD's approval and the approval just came. It has been happening in DRDO. Just like the latest Prahaar missile, there's no need mentioned but DRDO has made it in advanced hoping the apporval will come later from IA and MOD.

3) Or the third option, this news may well be hoax. I hope not, but remember last year when some news agency said that govt. has signed for 3 more Scorpenes.

INS aridhaman is already nearing completion....
And the hull designing is on for 3rd sub, but major part of work havent started...
I read in a thread here , that GoI plan to build 4 arihant class sub.. After that the other subs will be based on akula design.... So i expect totally 4... The govt knows that compared to other N subs in the world, arihant is not so advanced.... So they will start construction of next advanced class of submarines....

.
if thats how it is then yeah this is gonna start an arms race in the region, especially India and pakistan.

Keep Pakistan out of it, since these subs has nothing to do with them, but are clearly aimed on deterrence against China! Neither India, nor Pakistan would need SSBNs to fight each other, because of the close proximity, while we have little to pose a real threat on Chinas eastern parts. INS Arihant and followers will therefor fulfill the nuclear triad against China, since they can operate at long distance and with long endurance, just like IAC 2 will give IN the capability to projet the power to further distances.

.
India should maintain at-least 20 to 25 nuke subs
i know its not possible ovrnigte but constant decision like this is well appreciated it will start showing some result after 10 to 15 years

Are you kidding me?! The US has such massive fleet because of their economy. Our entire budget would go into maintaining and operating these subs.

20-25 should be conventional attack subs while 5-10 nuke subs are more than enough. We have other branches of armed forces too remember?
