The Government has given a go-ahead for construction of two more nuclear-powered Arihant-class submarines in India.

The move will not only enhance the strategic reach of the Navy, but also propel India into the top league of five nations including US, Russia, France, Germany and UK which have such sophisticated platforms.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has already indigenously designed and developed the first nuclear-powered submarine Arihant, which is scheduled to go for sea trials next year.

As things stand, it was just last month that India inducted the Russian-made nuclear-powered submarine Nerpa - rechristened now as INS Chakra - into the Indian Navy. It will go a long way in helping India to build, operate and maintain the two new submarines without delays and cost overruns normally associated with such projects, sources said.

A nuclear-powered submarine can remain submerged under water for more than three months without surfacing and is very difficult to detect as its engines emit minimal signature sound and enemy aircraft and anti-submarines detection ships cannot pick up signals.

Explaining the significance of building two more submarines in the context of global security architecture, sources said here on Monday reports indicated that China is also developing its first nuclear-powered submarine.

Given the growing maritime prowess of China with its plans to build two aircraft carriers besides submarines, Indian defence establishment wants to deny Beijing an edge and allow it to pose challenge to our strategic interests in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, sources said.

As regards the new project, they said India has already acquired the expertise in developing such complex machines while designing Arihant. In fact, Arihant, which was unveiled three years back by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, took more than 15 years of planning, design and construction thereby highlighting the complexities involved in such a project.

INS Chakra is expected to arrive in India by the end of next month. India has taken this platform on a 10-year lease for two billion dollars. This is the second time India has gone in for such an arrangement with Russia as the first submarine was acquired in 1980 for a 10-year period.

I thought the sea trials are gonna be done this year?:undecided:

I think the meaning are little bit twisted here. Already ins arindaman is nearing completion, Which is the second of arihant class. AFTER THAT 2 HAS BEEN approved. SO totally 4. AFTER 4 there wil be next class of sub mostly based on akula sub . :)

.
India should maintain at-least 20 to 25 nuke subs
i know its not possible ovrnigte but constant decision like this is well appreciated it will start showing some result after 10 to 15 years

by the way i feel its only 1+2 . read somewhere that the naval doctrine calls for a total of 3 SSBN and up to 6 ssn . (believe it was in the Indian defense review 2011)

I seriously feel, that the decision should be given to army chief or a group of army/navy/airforce officials.. it makes it easier to deman products when they are needed and the babus and their annoying behaviour can be kept away, anyways great news... :)

looking at the size of indian economy and the resources it needs to protect over the time and comparing it with chinese navy these numbers does make sense

No it is either...1+2 or 3+2. I am saying this because First one as we all know is INS Arihant. Now in early 2010 there were reports of the completion of hull of 2nd and 3rd Arihant Class SSBN at L&T shipyad and they were about to be transported to Vizag. A few months back the news came about the work started on one of these hull (2nd Sub also known as INS Aridhaman). So there are three possibilities....

1) Either this is the follow on order i.e. now the total is 5. Which was always a possibility.

2) Or The work on 2nd and 3rd sub started even before MOD's approval and the approval just came. It has been happening in DRDO. Just like the latest Prahaar missile, there's no need mentioned but DRDO has made it in advanced hoping the apporval will come later from IA and MOD.

3) Or the third option, this news may well be hoax. I hope not, but remember last year when some news agency said that govt. has signed for 3 more Scorpenes.

.
so this means
1 ins arihant already in sea trials commising this year
1 INS Aridhaman will begin sea trials by 2012, inducted in 2014
2 more to start construction soon.
1 nrepa coming from russia this year.

if thats how it is then yeah this is gonna start an arms race in the region, especially India and pakistan.

No news about its sea trials yet but after sea trials weapons trial will also take place. I hope it commission this year but i don't see this happening.

On paper it correct but lets wait and see...

Wells thats nothing new...As far as Pakistan going for nuclear subs, unless China give it to them, i don't think a nuclear sub is what Pakistan can make or can finance especially right now. Both China and India have been working on their respective nuclear subs for morer than a decade and then the first sub came to light. Seriously mate i don't see this happening, this project alone can bankrupt Pakistan. I think PN going for AIP based SSK is because they knew SSBN and SSN is not an option for them.

yeah tru weapons trials will take place soon and some missile tests have already been done. 1 or 2 yr delay if fine for commisioning. as long as it is floating in the arabian sea no one will dare to attack whether its operational or not. chakra and aridhman will join this year, with 2 more starting immediately.
