GMR row: India freezes aid to Maldives, ties under stress

Then call it Politics and Business NOT AID

:D Indians LOVE China

The long nose of India is even bothering small countries like Maldives now . Its a positive sign against Indian bullying.

Its open secret that every nation gives aid with the aim of getting benefit in return

BTW do you want make such "request" like the above, to US and UK members here, too?

Its a country versus country issue.

There are certain things other than religion. Try thinking sometimes beyond that twisted fanatic mind.

It is deadly cocktail of Religon and China which is responible for latest fisaco.

so you think they should be indian slaves ? and a sovereign country has no right to sign or cancel a deal with India ? that's why all of your neighbors hate you .you are not boss you are equal to them as a sovereign nation . deal cancel send in ships huh :fie:

They are illegally ending a legal contract and expelling Indians. They shouldn't be slaves to India of course but naturally some states are more powerful and influential than others and the Maldives effectively depend on India to provide certain economic benifocl and to provide security to them and the region. They are shooting themselves in the foot by expelling their biggest FDI partner from their country.

Help them prove in court that the deal was corrupt and, therefore, void. If proven, it would also expose the dirty business practices used by Indian companies to defraud the Maldivian nation.
.
Hardly, it was the World Bank that gave the contract to Indian companies after open bidding. It is pretty outrageous to claim there are dirty business practices at work. This is complety unsubstantiated slander especially when an outside court (Singaporean) has sided with India and put the govt of the Maldives in the wrong.

NEW DELHI: Maldives last week terminated its agreement with the GMR-led consortium to run the Male international airport after it unsuccessfully waited 45 days for an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a special envoy of President Mohammed Waheed to convey a letter explaining why the deal was unsustainable, a senior official from the President's office told ET.

The unilateral termination of the deal is at the centre of a diplomatic row between India and the neighbouring archipelago. "We wanted to explain to the Prime Minister the anger among the people of this country, the pressure the government was under and how ruinous this deal was for Maldives. We wanted to seek his intervention in perhaps convincing to renegotiate. But we received no response for a month and a half.

Indian companies are getting increasingly competitive globally. I dont expect a Pakistani to understand that tenders can be won with honesty.
It has been ratified by WB body and Singapore High Court.

Please take some time off and go through your posts in this thread. Here's a friendly advice......when you're hitting menopause, stay off the interwebs.

Contract is not law. You cancel a contract, you pay fine based on what was written on the contract, then it is legal.

Maldives has enough resource, it can be a very rich country like some other small countries.

at least stop trying to be brits and go back to india once to see the sad reality```what economical or 'security' can the barely not starving indian provide to others? india is neither a significent producer (giver) or consumer (receiver), do not think too high of your primitive country```it is just a quite size country where millions starve to death and many more facing social discrimination daily

WTF! They did not have to explain anything to PM Singh. The contract was NOT signed by Singh, India was not a contracting party.
It was a commercial contract; signed between the Maldives Govt. and a Commercial Entity, GMR.

That is PRECISELY the reason why Manmohan Singh did not meet any body. He is neither a share-holder nor a Director in GMR. Who would he represent? Who would he speak for? What would have been his locus-standi?

The facts are very simple the Maldivian Govt. has reneged on a commercial contract by unilaterally abrogating it. Now since it has been contested by GMR so it is sub judice. The initial response of the High Court of Singapore has gone against the Govt. of Maldives since it sees a prima facie merit in GMR's stand. There will be more to come in some time.

p.s. the objective of this attempt by the Maldivian Govt. seems to indicate some clearly mala-fide intentions. To use Manmohan Singh to brow-beat GMR.
PM Singh did not fall into the trap, since that would have exposed him to legal consequences.
In any case this is simply a fallout of the bitter fight between Gayoom and Nasheed.
Let them claw each other out and lets wait for the next SOS from Male.

We have 10th largest economy with world's second largest consumer base.

Trade with India has always benefited Maldives and will, if things get sorted out.

You guys give aid? To the Maldives? Practice one must assume.

Hm...that´s true. Maldives GDP per capita (6,000 USD in 2011) is higher than many neighbors in the region. Do they need aid from India?
