India trails at a miserable 102nd among 117 countries in the 2019 Global Hunger Index (GHI) released on October 15.

The rank is significant because the country seems to have regressed from its 95th rank in 2010 and stands way below its neighbours and BRICS' peers.

Alarmingly, India was the worst performer when it came to child wasting (age appropriate weight), clocking a dismal 20.8 percent. Among infants aged 6-23 months, merely 9.6 percent received the 'minimum acceptable diet'. The child stunting rate at 37.9 percent, was also termed 'very high'.

India's neighbours, Sri Lanka (66), Myanmar (69), Nepal (73), Bangladesh (88) and Pakistan (94) fared better on the annual index, which calculates the levels of hunger using four indicators – undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and child mortality.

Among BRICS countries, Brazil stood at 18, Russia at 22, China at 25 and South Africa at 60. China, is now in the low severity category, while Sri Lanka is within the moderate severity level. Even North Korea was at 92nd.

In a thin silver lining, the country improved its performance on indicators such as the under-five mortality rate, prevalence of stunting among children and prevalence of undernourishment owing to inadequate food.

How this index even calculated?

North Korea at 92? who determines that and on what evidence?

Having said that nothing to be proud off.

Also why no data on western (developed) countries?

I think one reason of india slipping down is due to rss extremist killing of people in india who eat cow meat and not allowing minorities in india to keep cows for their daily uses like milk, ghee etc

The numbers are on the decline in South Asia compared to past decades though, as a region, we are above the global averages so we have work to do.

The data from North Korea is unlikely to be representational since many of the hungry people are locked up in camps.

Yup they got rid of their larger sample + independent surveys....and went purely for the Haseena "95% seats won" govt + small selective sample ones:

You think Pakistan should follow same strategy of paper-only results?....or try to actually solve the problem on the ground?

You are not the first person to question the data coming out of BBS.

Honestly the whole region has so much to improve (on data gathering, analysis and then delivery through policy and sound, transparent bureaucracy), and lot of ppl rather focus on who is 1% or whatever % ahead or few ranks ahead on some paper result from garbage systems (overall) we have in operation now....and all the while people suffer. In a way, the problem becomes mocked and even casually ignored/dimissed in the end....because laughing at paper result of another creates inner problem of denial/introspection in the end (which is very needed for actual improvement and good sound debate).

I just simply dont buy anything anymore "number wise" from country that has lied about something to the scale of "3 million genocide" to found itself in first place and keep perpetuating that lie....and now producing glorious 95% seats won election results even that you find only in totalitarian countries tbh.

Every single thing I analyse from institutionally decrepit countries has to be 3rd party neutral vetted (i.e what they can prove outside their borders....by way of people, trade, investment, macro stuff etc...since this involves a full vetted exchange from others who simply dont have reason to distort or lie about these numbers and theres enough relatively transparent volume of these activities going on).

South Asia more broadly I scale this relatively speaking....but the conceptual problem is there in all of them. Maybe it will take some decades for the system and associated attitude to qualitatively improve lot more in the region.
