Narendra Modi government tells RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to keep a check on conversion hype - The Economic Times
27 Dec, 2014

NEW DELHI: The need to nuance the ongoing anti-conversion drive of Hindutva outfits so that it doesn't put the government in a fix has been conveyed to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, sources in the BJP told ET.

The RSS Sarsanghchalak is camping in Delhi, ostensibly to give 'marg darshan' (guidance) to BJP leaders, and a few middle-level functionaries of the party called on him on Friday. Bhagwat, in a speech in Kolkata last week, had endorsed the Ghar Wapsi campaign that had rocked both Houses of Parliament stalling the passage of crucial financial reforms Bills.

"The Sarsanghchalak knows that the Narendra Modi government has to perform for the Sangh agenda to succeed," said a BJP leader requesting not to be named.

"The Ghar Wapsi move is nothing new and cannot stop. It is just that it is more in focus because BJP is in power. The effort is now to ensure that it doesn't reflect negatively on the Modi government and its development agenda," he said.

Sources in the party told ET that most of the prominent leaders are staying away from the RSS chief, and it has been left to middle-level leaders like JP Nadda, Dr Harsh Vardhan and Meenakshi Lekhi to brief him.

Other RSS functionaries including Bhaiyyaji Joshi, Ram Lal and Dr Krishna Gopal also met him on Friday.

The RSS chief is on a six-day visit to Delhi, and instead of his usual stop at the RSS HQ in Delhi, Keshav Kunj, Bhagwat is staying put at a meditation centre in Chattarpur. "He usually comes for a day or two, and prefers to return to Nagpur after that. This time, he wants to iron out the problems, and the perception of a rift between the government and the RSS," another BJP leader said.

Bhagwat was briefed about the 'samanvaya' (coordination) meeting between BJP and Sangh leaders at Union minister Nitin Gadkari's official residence on December 22. Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and party president Amit Shah, among others, had met Sangh leaders Krishna Gopal and Bhaiyyaji Joshi to discuss the logjam in Rajya Sabha that prevented the government from passing crucial legislations like the insurance bill.

RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya confirmed the RSS chief was camping in Delhi but termed it routine. "RSS is having its organisational meeting. Today (Friday), representatives from five states are here. Tomorrow, representatives from five other states will be here," he told ET. Another RSS leader said Bhagwat steers clear of all controversies directly.

In a true secular system all these "missionary", "Davah" and "ghar-vapsi" should NOT be allowed. It should be illegal.

Everyone has the right to practice but no one should have the right to preach (read: convert).

Rajnath calls for anti-conversion law | Zee News

Lucknow: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Saturday said an anti-conversion law should be framed to check conversion and appealed all the political parties to think over it "seriously".

"I think that to check conversion, an anti-conversion law has to be framed. All political parties should think over it seriously," he said.

The Union minister was here to attend the platinum jubilee function of a girls college.

On the opposition parties' demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the issue of conversion, Singh said, "They should understand that statement of any minister was the government's side."

Former Union minister and MP Jyotiraditya Scindia had demanded that the Prime Minister should make a statement in Parliament about his government's stand on the issue of religious conversions by some organisations.

"He (Modi) is not merely the Prime Minister of a particular political party but the entire nation and every section of the society.

"Therefore, he must give a statement in Parliament on the issue of religious conversions to clarify his government's stand on such a sensitive matter," Scindia told PTI in Bhopal on December 21.

Digvijay Singh pitches for 'Freedom of Religion Act' - The Economic Times

"Instead of anti-conversion law we need 'freedom of religion act'," Singh told reporters in an informal chat.

His statement comes at a time when RSS and VHP have been advocating for strong anti-conversion law following a nationwide political row over instances of conversions and RSS and VHP's 'Ghar Wapsi' campaign.

Freedom of religion act is there in all the state and amendments can be made in Section 5. it is proposed to make it mandatory for the individual concerned to intimate in advance the District Magistrate or empowered executive magistrate through a declaration about his intention to voluntarily convert. Those violating the provision will have to pay a fine up to Rs 1,000.

At the same time, the priest conducting the conversion ceremony or directly or indirectly involved in it will have to send the intimation to the District Magistrate in the prescribed proforma within one month stating the name and address of the converted and the date and venue of the conversion.

Will not allow conversion of Hindus: Praveen Togadia | Zee News

Stating that India is a "Hindu rashtra", Togadia vowed not to allow cow slaughter, 'love jihad' and 'four wives tradition'. He called for enforcing common civil code in the country and sending back three crore Bangladeshi intruders.

The VHP leader said they were ready to embrace all Muslims and Christians who want to "return". "Some got converted during Moghal rule and some during Victoria (British) rule. If they want to come back, we are ready to embrace them," he said.

Stating that golden jubilee was not a celebration for VHP, he said they would celebrate when a grand Ram temple will be constructed in Ayodhya and four lakh Hindus of Kashmir will return home.

Togadia warned Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government of Telangana against turning the state into "Nizam's rule" by providing reservations to Muslims. He said there was a need for administration which cares for Hindus.

Bajrang Dal to launch ‘bahu laao, beti bachao’ in February - The Times of India

AGRA: After much hyped 'ghar wapsi', now Bajrang Dal is all set to launch "bahu laao, beti bachao abhiyan" in Agra. The right wing outfit plans to launch the campaign from the second week of February across Uttar Pradesh.

Under the programme, the Hindutva outfit's members will visit girls' colleges to create awareness about 'love jihad'. Members will also approach mothers of marriageable Hindu men in order to persuade them to marry off their sons to Muslim or Christian girls willing to marry into Hindu families.

Talking to TOI, Avneendra Pratap Singh alias Ajju Chauhan, state co-convener of Bajrang Dal, said the "bahu laao, beti bachao" campaign is aimed at stemming the "love jihad" campaign by Muslims in the country. The aim of the campaign is to save Hindu girls from "falling into the trap" of "love jihadis". It is also aimed at making Muslim or Christian girls daughters-in-law in Hindu households so that they can learn the rich cultural and traditional values of Hinduism.
