Get Used to It, America: We’re No Longer No. 1

Those per capita figures Chinese Macau ranks the first in the world

Macau's high GDP figures doesn't translate to high median income for the average people though, because the gambling industry doesn't create enough high-paying jobs for the population.

even Singapore is higher than US

Only for PPP. They are still slightly higher than us in nominal GDP per capita. We still have a long way to go to catch up to top US cities like San Francisco.

Anyway I'm flying to China tomorrow for a vacation. Any free VPN you can recommend? :D

Those per capita figures Chinese Macau ranks the first in the world, even Singapore is higher than US, a country's strength is on their overall industries, trade and other key economic factors.

China now is the world biggest industrial nation, trading nation and manufacturing nation, consumes and produces roughly half of the world major raw materials, US is world biggest military nation.

I don't know what are you trying to compare dude. The only thing going for China is 1.2 Billion people , They have 320 Million and still the economy is bigger than yours by quite a bit . The Universities are miles better , the cities have a better quality of life , much cleaner air , much more salary for immigrants and people , there is freedom to express your thoughts , the governance is much better , business flourish there like no other country and so much more . I would rather live in Pakistan than China where atleast you can speak your mind and not be thrown in jail for weird *** reasons.

Work on your human rights issues , Let People to express their thoughts and criticise the government . Nobody wants to live in closed societies like that. No amount of shiny airports can make you better when your metrics on per capita are comparable to middle income countries.

There are many countries where people enjoy a better quality of life than Americans but it doesn't mean those countries are more powerful than US. As for your human rights issue, you can talk forever those lies, what don't care and we don't want you to live in China either, China is not an immigration country.

We have many foreingers live in China now, as employees and tourists, China doesn't accept immigrants.

.
I used to live in China for 20 years, I can tell you this much

Not all in China are really rosy, the village my mother grow up in is in Dongguan, which is one of the most developed province in the South of China, however, not all parts of Dongguan is developed, the villain my mother was born in, still a village and people are still living a simple life.

If you compare Big City in China (like Shenzhen, Beijing, and Shanghai) to the like of US, yes, they are comparable to NYC, LA, SF or San Diego etc, on the other hand, not all of Chinese cities are like their first and second tier city, and a lot of them are still yet to develop, and those are not even comparable to third Tier US cities like Lawrence, KS, Bismarck ND, or similar cities. In fact, US does not have a definition after Second Tier City

On the other hand, while you can compare 1st tier to 1st tier between China and US, Top Tier cities in the US generally have a lower cost of living than Chinese 1st tier, except for a few exception.

And government healthcare system (like Obamacare or Medicare) does not exist in China, you only live a long healthy life if you are rich in China, if you are average income Chinese, chances are you cannot afford adequate healthcare, and they don't have Health Insurance in China, well, not until last time I was in China about 10 years ago. So I don't know where you get the fact from?

Your analysis is spot on but the healthcare system has improved alot since your last visit, they do have universal healthcare insurance nowadays but only for basic ailments. China is at least 50 years behind the states, that's why I don't understand why all these comparison on China and US. I also don't understand why the Indians feel so astonished about China, I reckon because their country is really so fcked up, maybe 100 years behind the states? Our infrastructure in some sense is better than the US in some key cities, our HSR, etc, but overall US is still more developed and 'richer'. So please guys, DON'T EVER SAY WE ARE NO 1. WE ARE NOT INDIANS, BE HUMBLE AND GROW OUR COUNTRY.

Lol dude do you understand that there is nothing in China there for Immigrants to immigrate to even if it opens itself up. Your Quality of Life is even below Thailand in HDI

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

China is ranked 86 below countries like Thailand , Armenia , Lebanon and Srilanka .

Besides Quality of Life Skilled Immigrants go to entrepreneurial countries where they are encouraged to take risks and grow.

https://thegedi.org/global-entrepreneurship-and-development-index/

US is Ranked 1st and you are 43rd below countries like Puerto Rico and Tunisia.

Immigrants go to countries where they have the best Universities . US dominates the world in Best university rankings and as a result they benefit from from having such skilled immigrants. China is nowhere near that .

Immigrants like to go to places where they are free to say anything , express their thoughts and not worry about being in jail just because they criticised the government. Have a look at how free your press is ranked even below Syria and Ethiopia .

https://rsf.org/en/ranking

No Immigrant wants to go to such claustrophobic and closed societies.

Don't know, but the OP is a Chinese tho.

Well, I will say if you are a upper class rich guy, living in China is probably welcoming, but then if you are a upper class rich guy, probably you feel food living in any top tier city in the world, like Singapore, Paris, Stockholm, Sydney, London etc)

However, not all of us are rich, and in this case, China may not be a better country to cater the low downan or people in between. And that is my observation, I don't want to nor looking forward to compare cities to cities with China and the rest of the world, it is simply pointless.

You are talking about a different thing, the OP article is from US and talks about a country's overall strength, not per capita wise, per capita wise Macau will be number one in the world. but still, with just decades of development, China has already achieved a lot, with one fifth of the humanity, the Chinese now enjoys a longer healthy life span than Americans.

Macau lower than San Jose , Hartford , Boston , Bridgeport , Washington DC and Seattle in per capita . Macau being rich is related to its gambling not its economic competitiveness like US cities. Even in Overall Strength US is ahead by some distance despite having one sixth of the population. China being overall powerful is related to it having 1.2 Billion people , similar to how India's economy is now equal to France. That's hardly an achievement when you need 1.2 Billion People to have the same output as 60 Million French . Same Goes for America and China .

. . .
India has 1.2 Billion . Is that suppose to be an achievement ?
We did achieved alot, but no we are no where near the US interms of per capita prosperity. But you do have to agree the US inner cities is like a turd world country, the interstate is in a bad shape after 50 years of neglect.

It's not only the per capita. You name each metric and you are behind by quite alot. Corruption Index , Governance Index , Entrepreneurship , Education , Freedom , Quality of Life , Prosperity , Job Opportunities , I can go on and on about it.

Dubai has Shiny airports too doesn't make them better than Switzerland or Norway. you guys are too caught up in your airports and how your cities look but when you look at figures they are behind even countries like Thailand and Azerbaijan. To Compete with US , first have a concept of freedom , to speak up and express your thoughts not censor A-Z like your government does. It's like ruling a bunch of robots where nobody is allowed to say anything. Making Skyscraper's doesn't make you like America.

Check the Political Rights , Electoral Process , Democratic rights given to Citizens in China . Its almost equal to North Korea.

Even Pakistan does better than you .

I did say we are not ahead of the US individually, but man you gotta come to China one day. I have been to a few US cities, and let me tell you, the inner cities is like slightly better than India. The infrastructure is creaky, the interstate has holes, the metro system is creaky. Freedom of speech, let's not start that debate shall we. US has got selective freedom, we all know that.

You are starting to sound like an Indian. :D

I have been to a few US cities, and let me tell you, the inner cities is like slightly better than India.

That’s because big cities have lower household incomes than their suburbs...just like people in your city areas have more wealth than your rural ones. Wealth in the US grew just like it is in China when people moved from farming to working in cities around 1870 to 1920. However wealth grew so much that it took another step where people were able to move out of crowded cities into their own custom individual homes in nice suburbs which happened in the 1950’s to the present day. A typical home in the suburbs is more modern than those in the cities just like your city dwellings are more modern than your rural ones. We simply are one more step.

Unfortunately many people were not as prosperous and they were stranded in the cities many in apartments owned by landlords (or the government). That isn’t to say there are no nice areas of cities or luxury condos. They just don’t make up the majority of the people in many big cities. Yes the home prices are still high in cities but in those poor areas they are more likely owned by landlords since the people actually living in them probably can’t afford it.

In term of people development, US is certainly ahead China, since US is a developed country while China is developing country.

However in term of city's infrastructure it may not be like that; the top tier Chinese cities could be more developed than the top tier US cities.

Talking about freedom and democracy, they are not basic/prime or even secondary human needs. What for you have election freedom but living poor? or living under high crime rate environment? or have insufficient infrastructure or health care access? talking about comparing with Pakistan, India etc :-)

Now talking about comparing with US. Yes US may have pride of freedom for election etc, but China's people have their own pride such as the meteoritical progress of their country, living in very low crime rate society, this could compensate the feeling of pride due to freedom for election democracy etc.
