No one is questioning the "existence of the law", but rather criticizing the law itself - slavery too once was legal, but legality does not take away from the immorality of the practice.

I'm not sure a slavery comparison is appropriate here AM. I can only think of something equivalent from personal experience..once in the uni gym I was at, there was a "woman's only hour"..not only did they occupy half the gym, but included all the manly equipment. If someone broke the rule (I considered it stupid) and turned up, they'd be thrown out, perhaps arrested if one continued to be obstinate..rules are rules, laws are laws. I'm just not sure you can compare this law to slavery. Slavery was unjust because it was discriminatory (not to say they've ended that even now), whereas this law is equally discriminatory (stupid in the eyes of some) to men, women etc. That's not to say I like the law of course, and I don't know if the Saudis like it either. Probably havent been polled.

Correct. She didn't deserve to be raped, but the fact is she was breaking saudi law, as were the rapists. Crazy laws perhaps, but those are the laws there.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have defended a judicial sentence of 200 lashes for a rape victim.
The justice ministry said in a statement that the sentence was justified because the woman was in a car with an unrelated man.

The case has aroused controversy at home and condemnation abroad.

US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said the sentence was an outrage and urged President Bush to put pressure on Saudi King Abdullah.

The 19-year-old, who has not been named, was travelling in a car with a male friend last year, when the car was attacked by a gang of seven men who raped both of them.

She has become known as the "Qatif girl", (oh so this is the reason cause she is shia she should be raped)a reference to the largely Shia town which she comes from.

Four of the men were convicted of kidnapping - but the court also sentenced the woman and her friend to receive 90 lashes each for the crime of "illegal mingling".

Last week the court increased the woman's sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison.

It also banned her lawyer from the courtroom and took away his licence. There is your law

'Astonishing verdict'

The Saudi justice ministry has defended the verdict and warned against "agitation through the media" - a sign of how sensitive the authorities are to the fact that the woman and her lawyer have sought to use the media to highlight the case, says BBC Middle East analyst Roger Hardy.

Meanwhile, Mrs Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the US presidential elections, strongly condemned the Saudi sentence.

"The Bush administration has refused to condemn the sentence and said it will not protest against an internal Saudi decision," she said.

"I urge President Bush to call on King Abdullah to cancel the ruling and drop all charges against this woman. As president I will once again make human rights an American priority around the world."

A State Department spokesman on Tuesday called the verdict "astonishing".

The US-based Human Rights Watch said it sends victims of sexual violence the message that they should not press charges.



But i do enjoy when Most people here are defending homosexuals and rapist excellent.

Dude, read the article! The woman did not get punished for being raped. The women got punished for being alone with a non relative male, which, according to Saudi's harsh laws is illegal. Now I don't want those sorts of laws where I live, but if a society wants those laws, let them have it (not that I believe there's been a vote to have it).

Sure..And the Saudis are only sentencing them to some jail term when the punishment for rape in Saudi is usually much more. I guess they must feel that the rapists were "trying to teach the "misguided" couple a lesson" in the car. Personally I feel those types of radicals should be hanged also. But the Saudi judicairy I guess feel they were doing Saudi society a favour. Different mentality to most other Muslim societies in that case, including Pakistan.

I do agree with you AM. The law is harsh IMO. However, there is a misunderstanding about the old Pakistani law afaik. It was not a simple case of get raped and then you must bring 4 witnesses to get a conviction (ludicrous by any mark). The Hudood law was known as the "Hadd" but there was a second law known as the "Tazir". The Hadd was the illogical law, but what usually wasn't mentioned was that the Tazir law was the more commonly used method for prosecuting a rape case. The evidence needed to get a Tazir conviction for rape was basically anything. The victim herself could make a statement and it would be admissible in court. DNA evidence was permissible for Tazir cases. The difference between the two was that the punishment for Hadd was much more severe than for Tazir. The reason was that Hadd was used where public rape was concerned. Gang rapes and so on were considered bad for society, and might have witnesses. So these fell under a Hadd case. However, private rape with no witnesss could be tried under Tazir which was a regular court case like any other. Once the woman had admitted she had sex with the man, she would be admitting to something illegal that if she could not prove was rape, might have been consensual. So the accused could then prosecute a case against her for consensual sex. The main problem was the sentencing, equating consensual sex with rape. But it's better the whole law was done away with. It had attracted too much bad attention.

Not just in Saudi Arabia it seems, since some ppl here are trying to justify it.

Yes the woman broke the "law". But can you even call it a law?? Being alone with a person of the opposite sex is a crime??
And while the woman receives 200 lashes, the man receives 90!

Saudi Arabia claims that its laws are based on what is correct and wrong in Islam.And so does Iran.

Two of the biggest Islamic countries in the world.

Now can you see why non-muslims have the misconception that women are treated inferior in Islamic societies. Would you blame them?
