They simply want to make money from China, use that money to upgrade their technology, then continue selling their products to China.

Look at everything happening in Russia. The same thing can be repeated in China. If the Taiwanese war begins, German and Western companies will leave China, lacking their products to lead to industrial systems in many different fields of China to be stagnant and pause.

China needs technology independence in all fields.

In worst case scenario, but the west and China may suffer, but who will suffer more? don't forget the whole global supply chain now is firmly in China's hands. The west had long lost much of their ability to manufacture and it's impossible to get them back. A full supply chain takes multiple decades to build and complete, manufacturing, logistic like stable power supply and large skilled workforce, transporation of advanced roads, railways, airports, ports....
