Germany To Nearly Double Defense Spending

Germany will be increasing its defense spending to 2 per cent from their economic output in line with an agreement that NATO states reached in 2014.

“Germany would drastically increase defense spending in the coming years to move towards the NATO target for member states to spend 2 percent of their economic output on defense,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday.

Merkel was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle that US President Barack Obama had informed her it should not be any longer the case that the US spends 3.4 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on security whereas Germany, its NATO ally spends only 1.2 percent of GDP on that.

"To get from 1.2 percent to 2 percent, we need to increase it by a huge amount," Merkel said.

To meet that target, Germany's defense spending would have to rise to some 60 billion euros ($65.8 billion). The current planned military budget for the year 2020 is 39.2 billion euros ($43.1 billion).

The contributions that NATO members make to the costs of the alliance are calculated with reference to their gross national income. Currently the US is paying 22 percent of NATO costs, compared with 15 percent for Germany, 11 percent for France and 10 percent for the UK.

It takes a lot of money to retool one's military and Germany is one of the least prepared of NATO nations, which is a bit paradoxical because it's economy has been among the most capable. Unlike France, Poland, the UK, Norway, or LLE, Germany has been relatively isolated from conflicts, regional or transregional and as a result has lapsed on preparedness relative to other NATO partner nations.

For a nation seen as a leader in the EU, and a major participating force in NATO, Germany hasn't pulled its weight. This increase in defense spending is about allowing NATO to keep abreast of concerns, which ultimately means being prepared for war, but this doesn't preclude a conflict. That's just a poor rationalization of the event.

German equipment is still top notch, but their preparedness isn't.

Late last year, as the German Bundeswehr was considering rebooting its expensive, failed Euro Hawk drone program, the army of the country with the fourth largest economy in the world fielded its newest armored vehicles in a major military exercise in Norway with broomsticks painted black and lashed in place of missing machine gun barrels. That detail was part of a German Defense Ministry report leaked to Germany's public television network ARD that exposed widespread shortages of basic combat equipment.

According to the report, the Bundeswehr units deployed as part of a test of NATO's Rapid Response Force in September were far from combat-ready: they deployed with less than a quarter of the night vision gear required. The units were also missing 41 percent of the P8 pistols and 31 percent of the MG3 man-portable machine guns they were supposed to deploy with. And none of the GTK Boxer armored vehicles that deployed were equipped with their primary armament—the 12.7 mm M3M heavy machine gun.

If they're serious about it they should buy atleast 48 EF Typhoons as the German production lines will close by 2018-2019 if no new orders are made and with them a whole industry will die and qualified workforce will wither away.A 48 new order would keep the lines running until 2025.

As another grimm news,Spanish EF lines will shut down in 2017,UK's by 2020.Thanks to the Kuwaiti order the Italians will survive until 2023.
