German Lawmaker Urges EU to Stop Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia

Germany and the European Union should stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia and abandon the idea of a coalition against the Daesh, also known as ISIL/The Islamic State, with Riyadh's participation, German lawmaker from the left-wing Die Linke party told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – On Sunday, German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel accused Saudi Arabia of funding radical Islamists, saying that Riyadh had been funding extremist mosques and communities all over the world.

"Instead of paying court to the Saudi monarchy, Germany and the EU should pressure it to finally stop the support of Daesh from their country. Germany needs to stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia, which is a decision in the competence of Mr. Gabriel. The coalition that Germany and other countries form with Saudi Arabia in the war in Syria has to be revoked," Andrej Hunko said.

Hunko added that he appreciated Gabriel's move, but he questioned Berlin's ability to change its political line concerning Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia and Germany are members of the US-led coalition of around 60 nations that is conducting airstrikes against Daesh in Syria and Iraq, a group that is prohibited in many countries, including Russia and the United States.

Today, some 250,000 Holocaust survivors live in Israel. They are living longer than was foreseen under the reparation agreement with Germany, with added expenses and high medical costs, survivor leaders say.

In addition, about a third of the survivors here are not covered by the agreement, because they escaped Nazi rule by fleeing to the former Soviet Union.

Some Israelis have argued that the country should be able to take care of its own elderly survivors without going to Germany for more money.

After a storm of protest by Holocaust survivors who charged the government with abandoning them, the state agreed earlier this year to give the 160,000 Israelis who survived Nazi ghettos and concentration camps a monthly stipend of nearly $300, in addition to tax discounts and other breaks.

It also approved monthly payments ranging from $40 to $125 for 80,000 survivors who came to Israel from the former Soviet Union.

The German government has committed to pay nearly 800 million euros for the care of elderly Holocaust survivors as a result of negotiations in Israel between Berlin and a fund for Jewish victims of Nazi aggression. Nearly 60,000 people will benefit from the aid money.

The German government has agreed to pay €772 million ($1 billion) for the homecare of Holocaust survivors throughout the world. The decision was reached by the German Finance Ministry together with the Claims Conference, a Jewish fund for victims of Nazi aggression, after negotiations in Jerusalem concluded on Tuesday.

The money, which will be given in stages between 2014 and 2017, will provide some 56,000 Holocaust survivors -- about a third of whom reside in Israel -- with home nursing care, medication and social services, said the Claims Conference in a statement. The funds are especially important now, it added, because the survivors who are still living are increasingly elderly and have an ever-greater need for such services.

The agreement also includes a notable shift regarding compensation for survivors of Nazi ghettos. Until now, regulations governing Claims Conference pension programs for ghetto survivors stipulated that only those who were in "closed" ghettos -- in other words, those surrounded by a wall -- were eligible for funds. Yet many ghettos, such as those in Czernowitz, Romania, and many throughout Bulgaria, were not walled in even though they were in many ways similar to closed ghettos. Jews lived under curfew, were deprived of jobs, were subject to persecution, were forced to wear yellow stars and lived in constant fear of deportation.

At the negotiations between German Finance Ministry and Claims Conference representatives, it was decided that two pension programs should be expanded to include Jews who lived in open ghettos under such conditions. The decision, which required the German government to commit an extra €7 million to €11 million, should bring compensation to an additional 2,000 to 3,000 survivors.

I hope everyone, even pinguin and me can reajust ourself taking care of the opinion, the feelings about how perceive others people our own way of behavior etc.. Like does my violence more ugly than yours ?
