However, the fact that Germany sells a lot of goods to China is the primary reason why they don't want an overtly hostile relationship with China. However, if Chinese companies start becoming peer competitors to German brands, this may change.

Nothing is guaranteed, but it is in Germany's interest to wrestle back the control of its own country rather than taking order from the US. So regardless of whether Merkel is there or not, Germany and EU at large will inevitably move towards a neutral position rather than entangle itself in a US/China competition that it has no stake in. There are certainly plenty of ideological rhetoric that points to other directions, but in the end it is always the state interest that prevails.
