always remember if some one not like to hear the criticism on Government then that person will change the channel , why he wanted to see Geo, or any other channel.

So please remember that it is in your hand to switch the channel, if you not like to watch any particular programme.

one another thing that from 3 november to 19 november more than 100 million sms sended ,, consisting headlines of geo. so if majority like to watch that channel then why we not wanted to let them see.

and i wanted to ask Mr.Mustafa kamal, that whole world, European union, common wealth, pentagon, UK, France, Germany , UN ask our Mushi to restore the private channel, i wanted to know why?and if shahid masoods are present on local tv channel, then why mushi put ban on international channels.

Guys again its not this govt, any govt may take this action. Geo need to obey rule set by the govt. Otherwise no chance for Geo. For news competition between ARYONE and GEO they were spreading total anarchy in the society. A total restless society. Our society nor media is ready for this type of extreme freedom. What they did, they abuse at its extreme. Now again if Musharraf will not open the channel, then non govt will open. Because its too risky for any govt.Geo and Aryone should sign the PEMRA and come back in their orbit. Otherwise they are not more then shooting neutrons of social orbit.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s ARYOne television news channel was back on air Friday after authorities lifted a ban imposed under the state of emergency.


The channel and another private news network, Geo, had been blacked out on cable networks since November 3, when President Pervez Musharraf declared his state of emergency.

Last week, their satellite transmissions out of Dubai were also halted by authorities there, meaning they could not be accessed via Internet either, a ruling which the channels blamed on pressure from Musharraf’s government.

‘The channel is back on cable networks in Pakistan,’ ARYOne news director Mohsin Raza told AFP.

‘Viewers have welcomed the resumption of the channel in Pakistan and we are getting congratulatory messages from across the country,’ he added.

Amina Rustamani, the head of Dubai’s media watchdog, said the decision to resume broadcasts was reached after a ‘mutual understanding.’

Rustamani said a decision on Geo News was still under discussion, according to a statement in Dubai.
Journalists have held daily protests across Pakistan against the stringent media curbs imposed under emergency rule.

The rallies have often been broken up by police who have sometimes beaten and arrested the reporters.

Asim, I understand you're from the world of journalism. Can you honestly say that Geo News provided balanced news? Did it follow anything close to a set of journalistic ethics? They were ok in the beginning but since March they went nuts with their coverage.

I mean come on, Dr. Shahid Masood alone, exemplified the type of bad journalism Geo was producing. And not only that, they were spreading a sense of hysteria regarding Pakistan and political bias that made Bill OReilly on Fox News look tame. I mean just the name of Dr. Shahid Masood's program "Meray Mutabiq" gives you a hint on how objective Masood's (who isn't even a journalist by education) is going to be.

I'm sure you all watched the final minutes of the Geo News transmission. I thought it was ironic because it was Dr. Masood who was asking a reporter how the international pakistani community was feeling and I swear to god, the reporter accidently let slip, that people abroad who were watching Geo got so worried sometimes that they would call relatives in Pakistan who would calm them down, telling them that everything is fine.

Goes to show what kind of work they were airing.

That was extremely pessimistic and anarchy. His program talk about some dark corner of society, which will swallow the whole country. Somtime it give me the impression a great blood revolution is due tomorrow morning. The best compare in private TV, i would say is Aniq Ahmed. Geo was totally entertainment with anarchy.

Once again - Freedom of speech cannot be absolute. Just as you do not have the freedom to incite people to violence, the media cannot have the freedom to distort reality and contribute to anarchy and falsehood that disrupts or damages society. That said, there needs to be a built in mechanism that both parties can utilize to address grievances arising from "one sided" coverage. However when it comes to opinion based programs, that have proven to be very popular everywhere in the world, it is almost impossible to regulate since the whole idea behind the program is the anchors "opinion". Unfortunately people get to trusting such people so much (O reilly, Hannity etc.) that they start taking opinion for fact.

The onus here is on the Media and the "journalists" to regulate themselves - which can be very hard to do considering how popular O Reilly and Masood are - the Media houses want to make money. So its a very dicey subject. A well educated and informed citizenry might be able to sift through what is scaremongering and what is not, but unfortunately Pakistan is not blessed with such a populace.
