Well in many societies, it’s called discrimination or corruption, but we have sugar coated it a bit and call it PERK.
I joined Airforce in 1986 when I was just 16. And now after more than 20 years shall I start to ask for perks? I don’t think so. I joined it at my will and wish, I get paid for my services and being a soldier it is my duty (not a favour that I am doing to someone) to protect this country against any aggression. I was in Peshawar in early 90s and flew number of missions against intruding Afgans, flew during Kargil and extensively during escalation of 2001. I performed my duties because I am a professional, not because I had hopes to get the Perks for my services.
In the time of AM Nur Khan and until ACM Zulfiqar there were no perks as today. All the senior officers used to pay their Mess Bills, electricity bills etc etc wherever they went but sadly not anymore today. Things took a sharp turn after ACM Anwar Shameem and C-130s were used to carry her daughters Baraat and Mehndi. Use of service aircraft for personal shopping trips became a norm. ALL IN THE OF PERKS. After that that has been no end to Perks and things actually have blown out of proportion.
I was reading AIRFORCE ONE by Kenneth T. Walsh, on page 28 he writes, ‘for years, the tradition has been to bill White House Staff members—and the President, First lady, and their families and guests-for their meal on the plane. He cost of an average breakfast is $4 to £6: lunch $6 to $8 and dinner $8 to $11.The effort to hold down costs in one reason why the meals abroad Airforce One are hardly gourmet fare; no one wants to spend a lot of money on them.’ Now have you ever seen the meal plan for our president or senior officials (military/civilians both) when they travel? I have seen it. And believe me they are not paying a penny on it. Again a PERK for their services. While in Sargodha, I have seen special aircrafts going to Lahore/Chaklala just to get the Mustard and Cheese for Chiefs breakfast as his choice wasn’t available in Sargodha. All in the name of Perks because he deserves so as he has given his whole life to serve the nation. What a crap!!
Asim, I can go on and on, and the dilemma is that these PERKS have no end in sight. Although we are a known poor third world country but in terms of PERKS we beat the most rich.
