Can anyone point to a speech or article where a national Indian or Pakistani politician corrected the mistaken beliefs of his core supporters?

You have to understand that the political culture of India and Pakistan is different from that of US..

Also, despite it being considered a part and parcel of Indian social norms, Gandhi did continuously speak out against the caste system and against untouchability - he gave them the rather patronizing name "Harijans".

Gandhi was not a politician..

Of course he was.

Trying to grasp how different. Does anyone know of Indian or Pakistani politicians who corrected their constituents in small group meetings?

You have to be kidding right?? If anything, the American politicians are well aware of their constituents and seldom deviate from their wants. Why do you think the Romney lost - in the primaries he was pushed so much to the right by the likes of that moron Rick Santorum. Whenever, Presidents have gone against the grain of popular opinion, they have ended up being assassinated - Lincoln who ended slavery, Kennedy who ended segregation.

OP, can you give an example from another culture/ country so one can have some context?

Meanwhile, random answer I can think of: "Pakistan khappay"

Can't deny that it's true, though.

There are like 100s of incidents where Imran got corrected or he arrogantly stood by his words, only to be proven right later !!

just recently the whole PTI got divided over whether to join Qadri's sit in in Islamabad or not, Imran stood by his stance to not join...and hollah it was a right decision and all the supporters who became critics on imran/CEC's decision admitted to stand corrected !!

LK advani called jinnah secular, faced wrath of his own party and core voters. He could not change their minds, but still sticks to what he said..
