NEW DELHI:
HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Chinese missile CM-302 is capable of flying at thrice the speed of sound
  2. It matches both the supersonic speed, range of Indian Navy's BrahMos
  3. News of possible Pak acquisition of YJ-12/CM-302 broke late last month

A game-changing Chinese anti-ship missile, capable of flying at three times the speed of sound, could erode a key missile advantage the Indian Navy has enjoyed over the Pakistani Navy since 2005.

An export variant of the YJ-12 missile, the CM-302, is likely to be the primary weapon on board four new Chinese frigates being built for the Pakistan Navy at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

The CM-302 matches both the supersonic speed and the range of the Indian Navy's BrahMos anti-ship cruise missiles, which have been deployed on several front-line frigates and destroyers of the Navy.

Senior defence officials monitoring the sale of new generation Chinese Type 054 frigates to Pakistan have told NDTV that the ships are likely to come armed with the CM-302, which they identify as a "new threat which represents a new capability."

But these officers also tell NDTV that "there is a long way to go for these missiles to become a credible threat for the Indian Navy" since the Pakistan Navy still lacks long-range sensors which need to target Indian platforms before a CM-302 can actually be fired.

"Possessing accurate targeting data, surveillance capability, and having the ability to penetrate a dense [Indian Navy] electronic counter-measures environment are a part of a complex matrix" that the Pakistan Navy's new frigates would need to overcome before they can attempt a missile launch.

Still, the acquisition of the CM-302 onboard the new Chinese-built frigates that will be inducted from 2021 means a lethal new capability for the Pakistan Navy.

According to globalsecurity.org, a leading online resource of emerging military threats, "the highlight of the YJ-12 is not its range but speed. It can reach 'Double Three' or 'Double Four,' namely a range of 300 kilometres at Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) or a range of 400 kilometres at Mach 4."

It is unclear if the Barak 8 Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM), deployed on India's newest Kolkata Class destroyers, have the ability to intercept a missile of this class. In response to a query from NDTV, senior Navy officers declined comment on whether the Barak 8 system has been test-fired against any supersonic anti-ship missile, let alone a missile that flies faster than Mach 2.

In an article in warontherocks.com, Robert Haddick, an independent contractor at the US Specials Operations Command, has said "the YJ-12 is the most dangerous anti-ship missile China has produced."

According to Mr Haddick, "the arrival of the YJ-12 is one more indication of how the US Navy is falling further behind in the missile competition against China, exposing flaws in operating concepts that US and allied commanders and policymakers have relied on for years."

Not to mention the secretive technology shares that chinese are doing with pakistan to give us strength. Pakistan should always firmly be friend of china. Chinese are helping us so much in every field but especially defence related technologies it is practically like anything top notch china has , pakistan has it by default. This example of friendship and partnership is perfect. I hope friends of china increase and be reliable to china. Because to us pakistaniz chinese are very reliable brothers.

.
It is vital Pakistan keeps increasing its military arsenal to ensure security

Chinese have been superb, as they spend more developing their military, Pakistan has so many options and choices

.
Pakistan Navy still has long way to go to match the Naval Prowess of India. They should focus more on transfer of technology to avoid dependency and debt from China.

Pakistan Navy is not trying to nor ever can match the indian mighty navy rather is finally getting the attention it needed for years and as its responsibilities have now grown but in a few years it will be a very potent navy to mess with which will be able to hold its on ground simply.

Its sad that India is being a bully to its neighbors. This is unnecessarily cause huge increases in South Asia's regional defense spending. India should focus on securing its streets so women are safe, building toilets, roads and other infrastructure development instead of obstructing others growth such as opposing CPEC.

They are not doing anything for us... this is business. They are selling us weapons to protect their own busness investments. It make sense. They also use us to check a common enemy..usa and india. At the same time we get the benefit of their investment and military tech to grow our industry and develop and improvw our defence

Thank you for putting it straight out there !!

At Mach 4, it could hit something 400km away in just under 5 minutes. Our AWACS can detect a plane at 400km, shouldn't be too hard to pick up a ship at that range.

The IN is in over confidence which is better, they fail to acknowledge that PN is also boosting its long range detection, tracking and engaging capabilities and in NCW conditions IN will find very hard to have sea control in Arabian Sea.

My intention was more about being future ready to counter ever growing debt and influence from China. In any scenario Pakistani Navy has to be prepared with state of the art arsenal but it should be not at the cost of losing voice in front of china but rather by making wise decision to deal with equipment suppliers likes of China and Russia

Pakistan Navy is well aware of all that mentioned above trust me on that , Its finally given the attention it needs and in a few years will be a potent force to recon with. All nations have there own defense needs and we can not compare apple with oranges what matters in the end of the day is that you hold your ground and give the enemy a bloody nose when war happens its not about wining or loosing its about surviving .. war is a terrible thing and both Pakistan and India will try to avoid it we will gain nothing while millions will die and the world will laugh at us as they have been for so many years.

This is called arms race... Enjoy the race.

Its called defending yourself against your enemy

Its something we should never leave to chance or hope for the best

Indian navy is bigger but it has to be because it has a much bigger coast

However with all the AIP subs coming and the more ships we are adding plus all these new missiles from Harba to SLCMs to theze we can secure our waters and ensure our enemy understands the consequences of any misadventure
