Game-Changing Chinese Missile To Pak Could Dent Navy's BrahMos Advantage

maxresdefault.jpg

A game-changing Chinese anti-ship missile, capable of flying at three times the speed of sound, could erode a key missile advantage the Indian Navy has enjoyed over the Pakistani Navy since 2005.

An export variant of the YJ-12 missile, the CM-302, is likely to be the primary weapon on board four new Chinese frigates being built for the Pakistan Navy at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

The CM-302 matches both the supersonic speed and the range of the Indian Navy's BrahMos anti-ship cruise missiles, which have been deployed on several front-line frigates and destroyers of the Navy.

Senior defence officials monitoring the sale of new generation Chinese Type 054 frigates to Pakistan have told NDTV that the ships are likely to come armed with the CM-302, which they identify as a "new threat which represents a new capability."

But these officers also tell NDTV that "there is a long way to go for these missiles to become a credible threat for the Indian Navy" since the Pakistan Navy still lacks long-range sensors which need to target Indian platforms before a CM-302 can actually be fired.

"Possessing accurate targeting data, surveillance capability, and having the ability to penetrate a dense [Indian Navy] electronic counter-measures environment are a part of a complex matrix" that the Pakistan Navy's new frigates would need to overcome before they can attempt a missile launch.

Still, the acquisition of the CM-302 onboard the new Chinese-built frigates that will be inducted from 2021 means a lethal new capability for the Pakistan Navy.

According to globalsecurity.org, a leading online resource of emerging military threats, "the highlight of the YJ-12 is not its range but speed. It can reach 'Double Three' or 'Double Four,' namely a range of 300 kilometres at Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) or a range of 400 kilometres at Mach 4."

It is unclear if the Barak 8 Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM), deployed on India's newest Kolkata Class destroyers, have the ability to intercept a missile of this class. In response to a query from NDTV, senior Navy officers declined comment on whether the Barak 8 system has been test-fired against any supersonic anti-ship missile, let alone a missile that flies faster than Mach 2.

In an article in warontherocks.com, Robert Haddick, an independent contractor at the US Specials Operations Command, has said "the YJ-12 is the most dangerous anti-ship missile China has produced."

According to Mr Haddick, "the arrival of the YJ-12 is one more indication of how the US Navy is falling further behind in the missile competition against China, exposing flaws in operating concepts that US and allied commanders and policymakers have relied on for years."

News of the possible Pakistani acquisition of the YJ-12/CM-302 broke on twitter late last month when the China State Shipbuilding Corporation organised the steel-cutting ceremony for the second of the four Type 054A/P frigates that Pakistan is receiving. A digital image (shown below) emerged which showcased a CM-302 missile mounted on a launcher on a Pakistan Type 054 frigate. It is unclear if this detailed digital image was sourced from an official release or was the work of a Naval analyst.

The likely Pakistani acquisition of the CM-302 missile comes amid reports that the government is considering the sale of the BrahMos missile to Indonesia. Co-developed with Russia, the BrahMoS can strike targets 400 kilometres away while travelling nearly at three times the speed of sound.

Hmmm i seriously wonder if both Pakistan and India are both being taken on a ride. Pakistan spends big bucks and gets new weaponry, to counter that India spends big bucks and buys new weaponry, then to counter that Pakistan spends big bucks.........................its a vicious circle and other countries are profiteering

The question is who started it? We should count ourselves lucky we have an ally like China. When the world boycotts, vilifies Pakistan and sells advanced weapons to India there is only one country that stands shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan. You guessed it right. It is China.

When the world applies economic sanctions against Pakistan, China stands shoulder to shoulder and invests billions of dollars. Today their rear is on fire and they caution Pakistan against debt trap LOL We show them a massive middle finger. We will do whatever we feel like doing. We will put Pakistan first and nobody can do shit about that. They can cry rivers. Fvck the duplicity.

In the jungle the tiger, lion and crocodile doesn't discriminate between a baby, adult or gender. If the animal is hungry he hunts and tears apart the tasty meal. That is how the world works. There is no such thing as fair play or justice. We will adapt and we will show all the enemies that there are no more free lunches.

As for the missile. Very beautiful and tasty. It is poetry. May we get many many more. As usual, thank you dear China!

Question is what does China get out of being an ally of Pakistan?

If we really wanted to put Pakistan first, we would have been putting all our efforts in making Pakistan strong economically and socially. We should have been making everything ourselves instead of just buying things. Wouldn't that be a better way?

tigers, lions and crocs hunt themselves, animals that make a meal out of other animal's kills are called scavengers.

The same thing the US gets out of allying with India. I have zero problems with the current alliances. Pakistan is in the right camp, finally.

We elected garbage for decades. One should expect garbage as outcome. The economy is no different. When you leave the nation in the hands of incompetent and corrupt people who sell their mother to the highest bidder you can expect a circus. That is just the cold truth.

The gist of my example is to explain that the world is nothing, but a jungle where countries eat each other without a second thought. We need to wake up and smell the coffee. Make alliances with reliable allies and not backstabbing bullies. The US doesn't partner up for free and neither does China. Here comes an open secret. Neither do we partner up for free. All sides including us have something to give and take. That is how international relations work. The question is who do we pick to give and take. I hope not a backstabber.

The missile is beautiful. Did I already mention this?

What i have learnt from history so far is that US make allies based on its own interest, once it has achieved its objectives it throws the ally under the bus. Currently US wants to use India to counter China and also wants a big piece of the Indian arms expenditure pie.

I couldn't agree more mate and we have only ourselves to blame for it.

i agree again, we must learn from our previous mistakes and also concentrate on making our country self reliant on everything.

Lol yes you have

Maybe the next PN acquisition has to be something like the new compact ship-based Chinese OTH Radar

Straight out of today headlines as if to answer our need and answer the specific Indian challenge. "Chinese navy’s new ‘compact’ radar will allow it to keep watch over an area the size of India" :-)
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/sci...ll-allow-it-keep-watch-over?edition=hong-kong

"The floating radar “will increase our navy’s information gathering capabilities in critical areas” including the South China Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, said the researcher, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue." (China could pass on data to the PN in the time of need)

Thanks to the CK400 AshM, the brahmos never had any edge to begin and now, whatever little breathing space it had left is REALLY gone.

Yes and No. While our offensive capabilities will now match (if we can carry as many missiles as the enemy), will the Type 054P match in terms of Defense; Air defense missiles? We need the 70km Extended range Ly-80B
http://chinesemilitaryreview.blogspot.com/2014/01/chinese-hq-16b-ly-80b-surface-to-air.html

Not just its range, but hopefully it has a similar dual pulse motor to maximize its kill probability, due to conserving energy for the final portion of the missile's flight

By 2023 PN will poose a very different picture vis-a-vis IN. even then IN will have more edge as in comparison to what IAF claim to have over PAF or IA claimed to have over PA.

for PN to get to the same level as that of PAF and PA vis-a-vis IAF and IA. they have to upgrade training and quality of HR. and induct few more key elements

Pakistan is the only country in the world having Beidou military signal and access to our spysats targetting system. The current Beidou is more accurate than GPS/GLONASS and is jam-proofed.

It's no coincidence we have a few dozen Yaogan sats, ELINT, IMINT + RADAR in orbit. If you include Gaofen and the others, we are talking about 40+ sats just for remote sensing, tracking, and signals intelligence.
We can basically track and identify and floating vessel on earth and sink it. =). When we say DF-21/26 is a carrier killer, we meant it.

Pakistan does not have CM 400AKG as confirmed by your own Commodore.

Anyways Barak 8 is more than enough
