It could not effectively do its job and for that India had to import Tavor. Which elite group in India have you seen using the INSAS? The Ghataks and Paratroopers use Tavor.

It was not meant to be a special operations weapon... and since the Tavor is much better than the carbine version of the Insas they went for the Tavor.

It has little to do with special operations and more to do with its ineffectiveness. 5.56 mm rifles don't weigh 4.5 kgs without magazine.

The INSAS was meant to be more of a frontline rifle for regular troops etc while the Excalibur should have been used for light infantry units (paratroopers etc) but it was a failure (too heavy etc)

It was certainly not a "very good" one, but it did its job.

It was too heavy, bad ergonomics, bad production quality, low ammo capacity, no full auto ...

Very lagake galti.kar di. You are absolutly right. With many defects it did its job.

Modern 5.56 mm rifles do not weigh more than 3 kgs empty. The 7.62 x 51 mm SLR weighs 4 kg empty. In fact an empty SLR is lighter than an empty INSAS even though the SLR fires the more heavier round. Modern rifles are supposed to be light and easy to carry. That was the whole concept about the 5.56 mm round. INSAS failed miserably on that account.

No question about its weight, thats for sure

Its way too heavy, especially considering its low ammo load.
