Future Indian Rifle

The MCIWS looks very promising and world-class. Hope it works as good as it looks. About time India managed to build a world-standard rifle.

why not invest on it.

Online discussions on internet have been going on for a very long time now. The army has finally decided to do away with the INSAS and go for a proper rifle. What are your views on the possible future Indian rifle?
There is only one option on the table for the Indian Military- the MCIWS, end of story. Currently undergoing trails and will start entering service by 2017/18.

INSAS was horrible. It was over-weight, not enough rounds and unreliable to say the least. The army compensated by ordering for more Kalashnikovs (both Russian and Soviet Bloc) and importing the TAR-21 and other western weapons.
This is utter nonsense. The INSAS is the Indian military's standard issue battle rifle to this day and FAR outnumbers the AKs in service (AK only operated in COIN environments).

Unfortunately it is still the exhibition stage.
No it is in the trail stage.

It could not effectively do its job and for that India had to import Tavor. Which elite group in India have you seen using the INSAS? The Ghataks and Paratroopers use Tavor.
It was never meant to be a weapon for elite units but for the Grunts and POGs. The Tavor is a specialist weapon used by the elite units in India just like the US's SOFs use the HK-416 and FN-SCAR whilst the rest of the US military continues to use the M4.

Investment has been made, it has been developed and us under trail as we speak.

A 5.56 rifle that weighs 4.5 kg empty, can carry only 20 rounds in its mag and has no auto-option is a BAD rifle.

It was never meant to have a full auto mode (but other INSAS variants do have that capability) and the IA stipulated a 20 round magazine so the two main issues you have pointed out are a direct result of the QSRs the IA issued and not the DRDO's fault, as for weight the newer variants with polymer furniture are significantly lighter.

Never mind, some people will always sing praises of INSAS rifle. Thank goodness its getting replaced.

It has served the Indian military for almost two decades now, millions have been produced and it has done its job of course it deserves praise. No battle rifle is without fault (look at the M16/M4, G-36, FAMAS, S-80 etc) but that should not overshadow this weapon's impressive record not just in the military but with police forces and even abroad.

Many people are still bashing the INSAS for issues that existed more than 16 years ago and were rectified long ago!
