With the purchase of the FM-90 SAM from China, this gives BD a very effective short-range SAM system.

To have a fully effective air-defense system, what is now required is the purchase of a medium range SAM system. This is perfect for BD as a dozen of these systems will be able to effectively cover the whole of BD's critical areas(large cities, air and naval bases, powers stations etc.) and also the fact that the cost of these systems will be far less than longer range systems.

To start this thread off, I propose that BD seriously thinks about the purchase of the latest Chinese KS-1 derivative, the HQ-12. It has a range of 50km and can engage 6 separate targets simultaneously.

We are already under plans of acquiring a 5-tier air defense network.

HQ-9 SAM & HQ-12 SAM any one of these two or both will perfect for Bangladesh Air Force...

1.In fact no one wants to confirm this news in BD. For one thing, HQ-12 developed some defects in Malaysia. Instead BD Air Def is likely to induct the medium range LY-60 in the coming days. For short range we are getting the FM-90. Two shoulder firing SAMs (like Stringers) to be inducted in are FN-16 and QW-18.

2. We have recently received two radars with range of 150 Km. Perhaps the first such export by our ally China.

3. But yes, we are going for a 5-tier Air Def. Also to note is BD Air Def doctrine to convert our small and compact land space into a jungle of Ack Acks and SAMs.

For which role does BD want SAM? City defense or for use near the border??

As BD is a small country with less strategic assets, the Air defence system can certainly cover pack the whole country.

I think LY-60D is a short range system !! and i like the jungle idea..

BD may be a small country but one HQ 9 with a 300 kms detection range is simply not enough to cover it..

I am not talking about one battery but the whole 5 tier system, there will be several high ranged AD systems in important places and rest of the country will get medium-short range systems.

Yes, it shall be the jungle idea. We have to put more stress on ground based Air Def since we will not be able to match in the air.
