Tupolev Tu-22M3 (Backfire-C).



Type: Strategic Heavy Bomber. Manufacturer: Tupolev, Russia. It is a supersonic, swing-wing aircraft with Maximum speed of 2.3 Machs and Range of 7000 km (4971 mi). Powerplant: 2× Kuznetsov NK-25 turbofans, 245 kN (50,000 lbf) each, Empty weight: 58,000 kg (172,000 lb), Loaded weight: 112,000 kg (247,000 lb), Max takeoff weight: 126,000 kg (277,800 lb), Guns: 1× GSh-23 cannon in remotely controlled tail turret, Bombs and missiles: external wing and fuselage pylons and an internal weapons bay for 21,000 kg (46,300 lb) of disposable ordnance. India in 2001 signed an agreement for lease of 4 of these aircrafts and later in 2006 India agreed to purchase these aircrafts

Fifth Generation Aircraft (FGA). Type: 5th-generation multi-role, air superiority fighter. FGA is being developed by India and Russia under 50-50 Joint Venture program. It will be based on Russian PAK-FA project which is being developed by a consortium of companies spearheaded by Sukhoi OKB. It is scheduled to take off by 2008 and to be inducted by 2012. Indian version will be different that PAK-FA and will take off by 2012 and will be inducted in 2015. The total cost of development is estimated to be around $10-15 billion.

Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA). Type: 5th generation stealth strike aircraft. It is under design at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), although it is still awaiting approval. The MCA development will cost $2 billion. If given approval, it should fly before 2012 and be inducted by 2015. MCA is envisioned as a replacement for the British Jaguar and Mirage 2000 of IAF, which will be phased out by 2015. MCA will be powered by two Kaveri engines (Mark II) which will have higher dry thrust than the Kaveri of LCA-Tejas; thrust-to-weight ratio of the MCA Kaveri shall be 7.8:1 and will also have thrust vectoring and supercruise capabilities

126 MRCA Deal: The six competing MRCA aircraft. (L-R): Rafale, Typhoon, F-16C/D, F/A-18E/F, JAS 39 Gripen and MiG-35. (Note: Not an official logo). The Government of India has sanctioned approximatively $10 billion USD (Rs. 42,000 crore), with reports that another $2 billion USD might be added to this. Number might be increased to 200. The 211-page RFP was released to the 6 bidding companies on August 28, 2007. All the bidders have submitted their proposals by 28th April, 2008. This deal has a 50% offset clause. The first 18 aircraft (1 squadron) will come in a 'fly away' condition, while the remaining 108 will be manufactured in India under ToT

Dassault Rafale. One of the contenders of 126 MRCA Deal. Manufacturer: Dassault Aviation, France. Max Speed: 1.8 Machs, Powerplant: 2× SNECMA M88-2. It will have RBE2-AA AESA radar. Unit cost: €51.8 million, US$62.1 million (2006).

Eurofighter Typhoon. One of the contenders of 126 MRCA Deal. Manufacturer: Eurofighter GmbH, a consortium of three separate `partner companies' - Alenia Aeronautica, BAE Systems and EADS. EADS is formally bidding for the Indian 126 MRCA Deal. Max Speed: Mach 2.0 (Mach 1.2 Supercruise), Powerplant: 2× Eurojet EJ200. It will have CAESAR AESA radar. Unit Cost: £61.5 million, €88.4 million, US$122.5 million.

F-16 IN. One of the contenders of 126 MRCA Deal. Developed By: General Dynamics, USA. Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin, USA. F-16 IN is the most advanced variant of F-16 and is customized for Indian 126 MRCA deal. Max Speed: 2.0 Machs, Powerplant: 1× P&W F100-PW-229. It will have Northrop Grumman AN/APG-80 AESA radar. Unit Cost: $35 million (estimated)

F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. One of the contenders of 126 MRCA Deal. Designed by: McDonnell Douglas, Manufacturer: Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. The F/A-18 Super Hornet has a single seat variant, F/A-18E and two-seat variant, F/A-18F. F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is primarily a supersonic carrier-based fighter/attack aircraft. Max Speed: 1.6 Machs, Powerplant: 2× GE F414-GE-400. It will have APG-79 AESA radar. Unit Cost: US$58 million

HAL Tejas. (Type: Light Combat Aircraft - LCA). Developed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), India. Manufactured by HAL, India. It is a tailless, compound delta wing design powered by a single engine. It is presently undergoing flight testing; it is projected to achieve limited initial operational clearance (IOC) with the Indian Air Force (IAF) by 2008, followed by full operational clearance (FOC) by the end of 2010. The IAF is reported to have a requirement for 200 aircrafts. It uses 45% composites in its airframe making it very light. Maximum speed: Mach 1.8, 1,990 km/h (1,205 mph) at high altitude (Mach 1 at all altitudes). Powerplant: 1× General Electric F404-GE-IN20 turbofan or 1× GTRE GTX-35VS Kaveri turbofan. HAL-HJT-36 Sitara. (Type: Intermediate Jet Trainer-IJT). It is under development by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) ARDC (Aircraft Research and Design Center) for the Indian Air Force. The HJT-36 will replace the HJT-16 Kiran in its role of as a trainer (Stage-2) in the Indian Air Force. The project began in 1999 with 1st flight on March 7 2003. The Limited Series Production (LSP) order of the Indian Air Force of 12 (Surya Kiran Aerobatics team) aircraft is supposed to be delivered in 2008. Final production could be 225+ aircraft, serving both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. Initial prototypes have flown with the Snecma Larzac engine, while the production models will fly with the more powerful Saturn AL-55I engine with about 16.9 kN of thrust (thrust-to-weight ratio of 5.59). Maximum speed: Mach 0.75 (825 km/h, 509 mph), Five hardpoints for up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) of a variety of guns, bombs, rockets, and missiles.

C-130J Super Hercules. (Type: STOL military transport aircraft). Manufacturer: Lockheed Corporation, USA. later merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin. C-130J Super Hercules is the newest version of the Hercules and the only model still produced. India signed the agreement for purchase of 6 C-130J aircrafts on January 30, 2008 at a cost of $ 1.059 Billion. It's a package deal with the US government under its Foreign Military Sales Programme (FMS), and India has retained options to buy six more of these aircraft for its special forces for combined army-air force operations. Deliveries will start 36 months from the date of sign of agreement i.e. 2011. Powerplant: 4 x Rolls-Royce Allison AE2100 turboprops. Capacity: 92 passengers or 64 airborne troops or 74 litter patients with 2 medical personnel.

A half born Kid on defence.pk holds more knowledge about Indian air force and its star wars capabilities.
