Paris (VNA) – Nearly 600 tonnes of malt from France’s central Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region will be shipped weekly to Vietnam via a new waterway route linking an inland port in the French department of Yonne with Cai Mep seaport in Ho Chi Minh City.

The route will create favourable conditions for trade ties between Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region and Vietnam, which is expected to thrive thanks to the European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) signed on June 30.

Since September, malt planted in Yonne will be transported to Vietnam to produce beer. The two sides recently inked a contract on shipping the first batch of 5,000 tonnes of malt to Vietnam.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Nguyen Thiep stressed that the shipping route allows businesses to transport goods at a fast speed to the two seaports of Le Havre in France and Cai Mep in Vietnam.

The route is expected to lift trade relations between the two countries by 20 percent when the EVFTA takes effect, he added.

France’s malt exports to Vietnam will increase to 250,000 tonnes next year, the diplomat noted, adding that Vietnam’s staples will also be shipped to France via this route in the coming time if meeting European standards./.

I hope too, although it’s hardly to imagine yet. Vietnam and Japan share much more in common. I don’t mean common in culture and custom but the view on other countries.

The global environment is changing very fast in past 30 years. Many unimaginable things became reality.

Not impossible but Unrealistic. The most hindrance is the size between Vietnam and China. Vietnam and Japan have similar size in landmass and population. Moreover Japan has no more imperial ambitions.

Japan has some choice. First, Japan is not weak at all. Japan can be much more powerful country if Japan rearm himself. Second, Japan is deeply industrialized country. Third, Japan is between Continental Power and Sea Power.

Vietnam is the opposite, I am not saying Vietnam is weak, but definitely much weaker than Japan. Vietnam need at least 2 generations to catch up with Japan. More importantly, Vietnam is so damn close to China and so faraway from any meaningful Sea Power.

A pragmatic foreign policy for Vietnam is, keep proper relationship with China as well as closer relationship with countries outside of this region to balance China influence.

It won't last long, Taiwan will reunify with mainland China in recent years. First island chain will be unsustainable. When H-20, 6+ aircraft carrier available, Vietnam really don't have much choice. Then a more pragmatic foreign policy should be joining China camp, so that sovereignty and territorial integrity can be reserved. Just like some European countries.

Thinking about good side. If Vietnam join China camp, investment, national security, military equipment, South China Sea issue will all be solved.

More importantly, Vietnamese looks exactly the same as Chinese, we both use chopsticks, similar food, culture, ideology, political system. We celebrate the same Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.

We are damn the same. Bai Yue (百越) are part of China, ethnically and culturally. History is history, the younger generation will move on and enjoy better life which is more important.

Just think about how many wars between France and Germany, how about now? War between France and Germany is beyond imagination.

Maybe it will happen sooner than most people think. When China and Vietnam will treat each other like true brothers and family members.

China has zero interest to invade Japan neither. We will remember Japan invasion but move on.
