ISLAMABAD (updated on: June 19, 2008, 20:43 PST): Four soldiers were martyred on Thursday in an exchange of fire with 'unknown attackers' at Pak-India border in Kashmir, the military said.

The soldiers were on a routine patrol along the Line of Control (LoC) when "unknown miscreants" fired at them, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP.

"Two of our soldiers embraced martyrdom at the spot and two others injured later martyred at hospital," Abbas said, adding that three others suffered minor injuries.

The attackers were hiding in the thick forest in Hajera sector along the Line of Control (LoC) on the Pakistani side of the border when they fired at the troops, he said.

Abbas said the soldiers returned fire and afterwards search parties were sent to hunt the attackers.

RAWLAKOT: At least four Pak Army soldiers were martyred and three others suffered bullet injuries when a patrol party came under attack by Indian troops’ allegedly cross-border firing at LoC near Buttle sector on Thursday.

Director General ISPR Major Gen. Athar Abass confirming the news report said that the patrol party of Pakistan Army came under armed attack of unknown assailants from a jungle in Azad Kashmir area. In retaliation to that, he said Pakistan Army responded and cross-fire is continuing so far.

To a question, he said due to the location of the scene nothing could be confirmed about the happening till the finding of the investigations which are being conducted.

He said the jungle from where the fire was coming is located inside Pakistan territory but situated along the LoC. More troops have been sent on the site, said the spokesman.

Many residents of the area, adjacent to control line between Indian and Pakistani administrated parts of Jammu and Kashmir, were also injured in the firing incident, reported ARY One World.

Local residents told the channel that the Indian troops abruptly started firing which continued for several hours, causing severe disturbance in evacuation of wounded from the area.

Emergency has been declared at CMH Rawlakot, while some eight ambulances have also been sent to the area.

ISLAMABAD: Four Pakistani soldiers were killed on Thursday on the Line of Control (LoC) with India in the Himalayan territory of Kashmir, the military said.

"Miscreants opened small arms fire on troops at around 2pm (0800 GMT) in Batal area along the Line of Control (LoC), killing two soldiers and fatally wounding two more," Pakistan military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said.

According to the spokesman, the gunmen were hiding in a wooded area that fell inside Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

"Pakistani commanders also informed the Indian officers about the engagement and sought information, if any, about the incident," Abbas said.

The nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours have been observing a ceasefire along the LoC, the de facto border dividing Indian and Pakistan administered territories. The two sides have fought three wars, the first two over Kashmir, since gaining independence in 1947.

RAWALPINDI: Four Pakistani troops were martyred as a result of exchange of fire here at Line of Control (LoC).

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirming the occurrence of the above incident, said the exchange of fire began at 2:00 PM and went on till 6:00 PM.

The initial reports confirmed deaths of two Pakistani troops and injuring of as many others.

The bodies were shifted from the site of the incident after the Pakistani troops returned fire, said Pakistan military spokesman.

Pakistan says four of its soldiers have been killed by "unknown attackers" in the disputed territory of Kashmir.

An army spokesman told the BBC the clash took place along the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the region.

He said the small arms fire which killed the men had come from the Pakistani side of the de facto border.

India says militants opposed to its rule in part of Kashmir cross the LoC. Such incursions have dropped since a 2003 truce between India and Pakistan.

Several recent firing incidents across the line and rare allegations of ceasefire breaches have underlined how fragile the peace is.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety and have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region.

Patrol 'fired on'

Pakistan's military said two soldiers were killed on the spot in the clash on Thursday afternoon, and two others later died of their injuries.

"The incident took place in the Hajeera sector opposite the Indian-controlled region of Poonch," Pakistani army spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas told the BBC.

"It happened when a routine Pakistan army patrol was fired upon from a wooded area close to the LoC, but on the Pakistani side.

"I cannot confirm the identity of the attackers at this point."

Meanwhile, India's military said it had foiled an incursion by suspected militants in the Poonch sector.

"Even the Pakistani troops fired at the infiltrating militants who managed to run back and melt into thick mountainous forest," an Indian spokesman told the BBC.

The Hajeera sector has been known in the past for heavy artillery skirmishes between the two armies.

It has also been used by militants belonging to Pakistan militant organisations to cross into Indian-controlled Kashmir.

That region has been the focal point of an insurgency by the militants, although it has receded in intensity since the 2003 ceasefire.

India has often accused Pakistan of aiding the insurgents in the past. But it has admitted the border crossings have decreased dramatically since 2003.

The militants have accused Pakistan of selling out over the Kashmir cause.
