New Delhi:

With just four days to go for the Games, the Indian Air Force has put in place a tight security cover against aerial threats. The Army, for its part, has deployed specialised teams to conduct night surveillance of all the venues, besides activating its anti-nuclear, chemical and biological contamination units.

On Monday, the Air Force activated a comprehensive air defence network over the city, covering a 60-km radius from India Gate, involving the deployment of mobile surface-to-air missile units, radars, anti-aircraft guns as well as armed choppers to take on aerial threats. Fighter aircraft, including SU 30 MKIs and MiG 21 Bisons, have also been kept ready at nearby air bases.

The Army has deployed specialised teams to deal with chemical, nuclear and biological threats and put a long-distance night surveillance network in place at all venues. An extensive network of L70 air defence guns that can be used to neutralise low flying targets has also been installed. In addition to this, bomb disposal teams and sniffer dogs have been kept ready.

“We have taken all contingencies into consideration, including aircraft hijacking, low-speed aerial threats, balloons and microlights,” an official said.

Sources said armed choppers, including Mi 35 attack helicopters, will be airborne during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games. Two searcher Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) will also be put into action during both the ceremonies.

Specially-trained sniper units of the Delhi Police will be deployed at mobile observation posts to deal with sub-conventional threats such as aero-models and balloons. A network of Pechora, OSA AK and Igla surface-to-air missiles will be put in place by the Air Force while L70 anti-aircraft guns will be kept ready for use by the Army. Mi 17 and Mi 35 armed helicopters will patrol the skies, and smaller Cheetah/Chetak choppers will be deployed for emergency transport and casualty evacuation contingencies.

IAF mounts air cover for CWG

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force has mounted unprecedented air defence surveillance and protection with adequate ground support from the Army ahead of the Commonwealth Games that get under way here on Sunday.

The overall security management for the multi-discipline event is being coordinated by the Union Home Ministry with Delhi police capacity being augmented by police from Central paramilitary forces.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday reviewed the security arrangements and saw for himself the preparations in the control room located inside the North Block.

Holistic air defence

The IAF plan provides for holistic air defence against all conceivable aerial threats, official sources said, adding that its radars along with those of the Airports Authority of India will scan the skies round-the-clock.

Besides perceived conventional threats from hijacked aircraft, low speed and high speed aircraft, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), it envisages unconventional threats including those from micro-light aircraft, para/hang gliders, balloons and remote flying aero-models.

The Delhi police have been trained by the IAF to detect low-altitude flying objects, especially in urban areas, which police snipers would bring down while two IAF UAVs will be hovering between 6,000 feet and 10,000 feet to gather input on any intruding aircraft.

The airspace will be closed for all unscheduled flights during the Games.

The Army Air Defence will provide support from the ground besides the Air Force deploying surface-to-air missiles like Pechora, OSA-AK and Igla systems.

India's frontline fighter Su-30 MKI, MiG-21-Bison and MiG-29 will be on Operational Readiness (stand-by) mode at air bases in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Sirsa and Adampur in Haryana and Srinagar during the period to tackle any intrusion.

In addition, the IAF will provide combat air patrol and reconnaissance through MI-17 and MI-35 attack helicopters while Chetak and Cheetak helicopters will conduct reconnaissance of the Games areas.

Err, isn't this just exaggerated too much? The threat? I mean how many times have terrorists attacked India with aerial firepower that needs SU30 on stand by?

Like seriously are you expecting China and Pakistan to send in the airforce to sabotage CWG?

MI35 flying in the city?

This is too much....

We are not taking any chances when it comes to security. Better safe than sorry.

Well, There is a saying in Malayalam "Odunna Patti ku oru mozam Munbe" , Which Means Throw stone A feet Ahead to hit a Running Dog.. Thats exactly is being done here, We have Thrown security for all the Possible scenarios which could disrupt the Games, Even the 9/11 scenario is not Left alone, there are SAMS stationed to Hit a rogue Aircraft

Nice one....

I have noticed high security at one of the Air Force Station. Such security is implemented only when they celebrate Air Force Day.

IMPRESSIVE.
But the bigger danger will be from the Smarter Terrorists who could Reach our Parliament.

I am proud of our Armed forces without whom CWG can never even be dreamed of...

.
There were reports of terrorists making use of hand gliders to do a aerial terrorist attack.

Although using sukhoi to shoot them down would be an overkill I believe.

.
think about 9/11 type attack on stadium or important places... su30 is to prevent that...

every thing is for just in case... there is nothing wrong in being prepared for the worst...

Why no dhruv? There's no mention of dhruv in above list of helos being used. I would have thought it would be ideal in this task, much better than the lumbering mi17 and mi35? Why not?? It seems every other type of helo in use with IA and IAF is there are pacticular reason for this??

There must be some reason for this, as they are the one who have assessed teh risk based on the intel input. Now Dhruv though weaponized still not inducted completely to Army, its in IOC stage.

Su-30 has the maximum endurance among all of the Indian inventory - that means in the event of any terrorist aerial attack, less number of Sukhois with a greater endurance can dedicate more time to surveillance/tracking with less no. of sorties.

This is just to create a hype.... and all indian fellows please note down this that indian agencies will do some terroriest acts in CWG to blaim Pakistan....

All recent statements from USA and India pin point this, they will create anything like that to blaim Pakistan and to hit targets in Pakistan..

My Question to you indians .... in case of any such attacks how many of you will investigate that yout internal agencies are not involved to create world favor against Pakistan and to pressure Kashmir issue....

I wish the games went fine without anything like that but the statements and actions advice something else.....

Boss you have a very good vivid imagination you can try something in bollywood... India will not act anything so stupid which will jeopardize the india's image by which it will make india not to host any of the future games... i will not blame you because unlike you lot of people have been brainwashed by your GoP/ISI to prove India is a bad element.. You can check news coming across the world which state actors are responsible for all the troubles in most parts of the world.
