What's new

Forget China, our competition is Bangladesh now. Only PM doesn’t acknowledge this

4. Bangladesh should first become a middle-income country, then invest in education and infrastructure, and then enter machinery manufacturing and other industries. These industries are the stairs from middle-income countries to high-income countries. It's too harsh for you to ask Bangladesh to enter these industries now.

Thank you for stating what I have been saying for a long-time and that is BD industrial technological level and output is right for its current levels.

We are already seeing medium tech companies(electronics and pharma) being successful in even developed markets like Western Europe and USA.

Only starting sometime next decade(late 2030s?) will we see these companies investing billions of dollars each year into cutting-edge R&D to try to reach the world's true technological leaders in China, Korea, Japan, Western Europe and USA.

Like you say a single unitary country with a stable government that is singularly focused on economic development, its rise to become the richest country in S Asian is almost assured now.

It only remains to be seen just how much richer over the next 2-3 decades that BD becomes over S Asia - it could end up as the only developed country in S Asia with the rest either middle income or even one or two still 3rd world. We need to wait till the 2040s to know this for sure.

This is nothing unusual as BD was the central pin that made Mughal India the richest part of the planet 3 centuries ago, along with China.

@UKBengali

UKB Bhai,

Vietnam which is currently following a model that may lead it into a "middle-income trap" like what happened to the likes of Thailand etc.

Lets not fall into a fallacy like this. Getting into a "middle income trap" is not exactly such a horrible thing considering our current state of affairs. Even if we get to a Thailand level economy and are struck there, between the three of us we give more than a billion citizens a more decent and honorable life that they have had in the past.

Regards

True but the poster was saying Vietnam all good and India all bad and my reply was based on this.

BD can take lessons from both and India is one of the most critical states to BD economic development, probably on the same level as West and China.

Anyone who thinks BD can develop without very close co-operation with India is simply blind.

The policy error of the current government has been that it is focussing solely on hitech capital intensive manufacturing, but not low tech labour intensive industries. All effort is to bring things like Semiconductor/Hydrogen/Solar Cell manufacturing into the country. Well how many people is a semiconductor factory going to employ? It might have a very high output in terms of GDP but will employ only a small number of people. Same for a hydrogen factory.

One can see the real source of China's power if one walks into something like a Dollar Store. Pretty much everything except food items is made in China - utensils, stationary items, plastic decorations, bathroom stuff(plungers, toothbrush holders), lights, tool boxes and tens of thousands of items like this. All of them low tech, but they probably employ tens of millions of people.

Government needs to change focus from all the fancy news grabbing headline stuff like Semiconductor to focus more on low tech industries like textile and low tech plastic goods.

Now something like this is truly gamechanger - https://theprint.in/india/pm-modi-h...cepted-globally-say-industry-leaders/1028052/

Not just this govt but every Indian govt starting from Chacha e Qaum's. We need to get into labour intensive manufacturing unfortunately the places best suited for that- BIMARU and Eastern India are in a royal mess.

Dude,

Excellent post.

You will find that Ukbengali and I - want more low tech job intensive industries.

Hasina is focussing on a few “prestige industries” to mollify the insecure bunch.

Most of those insecure bunch have taken shelter in PDF. And spout nonsense against Hasina.

I think the Indian illusion is that India only focuses on high-tech industries.

If I don't know India. You will make me think that India is a technologically advanced country.

But. Sorry, I really have never used any Indian high-tech products. Even if China is the world's largest market. India can only export agricultural products and raw materials to China.

Or do you mean that India's IT is a high-tech manufacturing industry? I don't know who is using Indian IT products. But I heard that before banning Chinese apps, India had Alibaba, Tencent, UC browser, Tiktok, baidu....

BIMARU states have too many disadvantages to be ever competitive in low tech labour intensive industries:

1. Anti women ethos. Without massive women participation. You cannot become competitive.

2. Transportation. Even with “freight equalisation” - costs and time is a big barrier. Factories have to be no more than 100 miles from a coast.

3. Time to market. The labyrinth of state laws makes just in time manufacturing impossible.

4. Caste. Low caste want to escape their caste burden. And only see office work as the only route. They would rather do a lowly pion job than work in a factory.

5. Water. Low tech manufacturing is water intensive. BIMARU states are dry.

Nor have I used any “High tech” chinese product or can find any except cheap ripoffs.

Huawei 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bangladesh is an insignificant country. It's map comes free when you buy a map of India.
Bangladesh is no competition, it's a demotion. We have a rough idea what will happen to BD when Sheikh Hasina falls.
Two of our neighbours have already become economic baskets of the world owing to Chinese fraandship. It's good BD is trying to stabilize it's economy. One less tension for us.

So Aakar Ahmed Patel should pay his $1.2M fine, ask Amnesty to pay their $6.25M fine and take a chill pill.
