What's new

Forget China, our competition is Bangladesh now. Only PM doesn’t acknowledge this

@UKBengali

UKB Dada (Hope it is OK to address you as Dada)

India and BD should use each other as a yardstick to check their level of economic performance.

Indeed there is much that each can learn from the other and cooperate.

Well I am 45 years of age and so not sure how old you are but it is fine to call me that.

Forget the "hot heads" from both BD and India as both countries are now linked in an economic partnership and both can and will drag each other out of 3rd world status over the next 10-15years - yes exaggerating a little as regards BD's influence on much larger India but BD will definitely greatly influence the NE States and W Bengal economies for sure.

But, whatever was said by other people yesterday, can you not see BD remains today an unsuccessful country not much above the basket case level?

What is our development except producing a few million meters of textile goods? Can you cite any other sector or can you not see how many billions of dollars BD has so far borrowed?

It cannot produce almost no mechanical technology goods. BD is a case of underachievement, yet BD people talk as if BD is another giant Japan or Germany.

1. With the fall of Sri Lanka, everyone realized that Bangladesh, which has a peaceful environment and homogeneous nation, and has chosen the path of industrialization, is bound to become the richest country in South Asia.

2. Every country on the road to industrialization began with the textile industry, such as Britain, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, and China. Bangladesh is certainly no exception.

3. No one says that Bangladesh has reached the level of Japan or Germany, but Bangladesh is developing rapidly, which is a very obvious thing.

4. Bangladesh should first become a middle-income country, then invest in education and infrastructure, and then enter machinery manufacturing and other industries. These industries are the stairs from middle-income countries to high-income countries. It's too harsh for you to ask Bangladesh to enter these industries now.

5. The current poverty in Bangladesh is not caused by the current Bangladeshis, it is the tears left by history. Whether this country is successful or not depends on whether it is full of hope. Obviously, international investors are full of confidence in Bangladesh, so Bangladesh is not a loser.

6, I suggest that Bangladeshis learn more from Vietnamese and often compare with Vietnam. Forget the cesspit in India.

I am a tad over 50.

Yes, for sure. WB, Bihar and Assam should seek to learn from the BD experience and try to get into light manufacturing (RMG, leather, toys etc) in a big way. BD, Nepal, Bhutan and NE India can be part of a large power grid.

Already happening as India is building a hydroelectric power plant and 500MW out of 900MW capacity will be supplied to BD. India will take most of the rest.
Think it is due to come online in 2026

.
BD should also target to try to catch up with the richest Indian states like Gujarat within the next 10-15 years

The commodities which have brought the highest foreign currencies by way of exports from Gujarat include refined petroleum products, cut and polished diamond, chemicals, ceramics, cotton yarn, vegetable fats, textiles, oil seeds, machinery, engineering products and brass parts
Reliance Industries-owned Jamnagar Refinery is the largest oil refinery in the world

Indeed. Unfortunately it has been run by the Bhutto clan which doesnt help. Karachi should have been a trading hub for the subcontinent along with Mumbai

2 million BD Hindus have moved back in the last 10 years into BD.

Many millions more are likely to follow over this decade and next as BD economy keep getting better and better.

BD Hindu population is growing as share of total population.

So the termites are coming back instead of taking advantage of NRC/CAA.

@PadmaBridge

That will add another 20 million termites to India.

BD Hindus are considered regular Indians, not termites

Regards

Obviously not by the Amit Shah chap!

Please don't call Bangladeshi Hindus termites. They are Bangladeshi citizen as much as anyone from other faith. Just because India treats its Muslim citizens unjustly, we shouldn't be doing the same. We as Muslims are bound to higher standards. What would be the difference between us and them if we start acting like them? Islam teaches us to be fair and just.

If there is any specific individual who is actively trying to ruin Bangladesh and become part of India, you can cuss those individuals all you want. But in general, let's move with the notion that everyone is patriotic Bangladeshi.

India doesn't treat its Muslim citizens unjustly. Unfortunately, the media only highlights cases of hatred and bad stuff. But it's not the ground reality.

How many muslim ministers do you have? How many mps in your ruling party or in your opposition parties? What is the muslim population as a percentage of your population vs their representation in politics, media, civil administration, military?

I categorically can state that the ground reality is much worse than what is reported.

Well Vietnam is over-rated as it has access to sizeable natural resources in terms of hydroelectric power and oil/gas reserves when compared to BD.

It also is mainly a re-exporter rather than building its own indigenous companies as much as BD is doing.

BD economic growth looks like it is on a more sustainable footing for the long term unlike Vietnam which is currently following a model that may lead it into a "middle-income trap" like what happened to the likes of Thailand etc.

As for India BD can use it's success in IT as it builds up its own IT industry to new heights over this decade.

For purely geographical purposes India will remain a key nation for BD in terms of its economic development.

UKB Bhai,

Vietnam which is currently following a model that may lead it into a "middle-income trap" like what happened to the likes of Thailand etc.

Lets not fall into a fallacy like this. Getting into a "middle income trap" is not exactly such a horrible thing considering our current state of affairs. Even if we get to a Thailand level economy and are struck there, between the three of us we give more than a billion citizens a more decent and honorable life that they have had in the past.
